tbh not much of their argument seems coherent either way. I think it really comes down to the editors wanting to smoke pot, and not wanting to smoke cigarettes.

No. The New York Times editorial staff maintains a stance in favor of legalizing marijuana, but opposed to tobacco, including e-cigarettes.

ARM now makes chips with instructions designed specifically for running a VM (like the JVM, it even calls them the Java extensions). I don't know if Intel has any plan for that kind of thing.

That is surely the case some of the time, but when there's an ROI penalty of -30% for moving the money back into the USA, that tips the scales hard in one direction.
The simple truth is, the word "better," by itself, is vague
very true. And yet people often think they are 'better' in some vague way, just because they are smarter.
When it comes to living with someone, and deciding whether to live in Virgina or New Mexico, smarter doesn't make you better or even righter, because whether to live in Virginia or New Mexico is a want. If someone wants to live in New Mexico, then logic isn't going to change things.
Not that I'm saying I'm better than people who are wrong.
