But lately, as technology has become more sophisticated, the drumbeat of worry has intensified.

It hasn't increased. Probably the high-point for this worry was the Luddites. And another high-point was in the 50s, when computers were first coming out, and movies played on that worry. When was the last movie where a job-taking-computer was the main villain?

The sort of programs you call 'software engineering' are not scoped to be 4 year degree. They can be done in two years at Devry or something.

I do completely agree with you that universities are doing what you describe, but I feel those universities are ripping students off (by charging them too much and teaching them too little).

we already have a huge problem with recruiting. I cleared 37 voicemail messages from recuiting mills that dont even source their call centers in the US. most of this was for 3 month contract or 6 month contract work, shit that is beneath anyone but that corporations feel like theyre fucking entitled to. I routinely roll out of bed for calls from these shitlords at 2 AM because someone didnt set the callcenter ntp server in india properly.

Simple solution: don't put your phone number on your resume.

When you get emails, then start by telling them "I am not interested in anything less than $180k" (or whatever the market will carry in your area). That will weed out everyone but the companies that pay well.

WW1 was not a land dispute.

It was definitely a land dispute. France wanted their land back that they lost to Germany in 1870. The Germans were remembering Frederick the Great, emulating his land grabs. The British offered territory to Italy to join the fight.

No one cared much about Serbia: even Austria didn't care too much. To think that the war was about the assassination is to overlook a lot of history. The assassination was merely the trigger so many people were hoping for.
