I expect you're right... but actions like this could very well cause companies like Apple and Microsoft to start exploring other manufacturing options away from Foxconn.

I know the camera makers and har drive manufacturers already have a significant presence in Thailand, so I can't imagine it would take much more than a willingness to invest sufficient capital in order to move iPhone manufacturing there.

Since this only affects government purchases, we'd have to know whether a significant part of last quarter's Chinese sales involved government entities purchasing these products.

I'd expect government sales - especially to China - aren't a huge part of Apple's business.

I've found it funny when I've made arguments about Google's ad scanning being something I didn't like, and people always came back with "but it's 100% automated and completely anonymous - no human ever looks at your mail".

I think that argument just got settled with this story - and I won.

Now, having said all that as a justification for why I don't use gmail for my personal mail...

Given that Google already regularly scans your email, I'm not going to complain about their actions in this case. For once something useful may have come from it. But given some of the explicit spam I've seen over the years, I'm not sure that I won't change my mind on this at some point over the next few days. There might be potential for some life-ruining mistakes here on the part of either Google or the police. I really need to know more about whether this email triggered a thorough and careful investigation that led to the arrest of the person, or if the email WAS the trigger for his arrest.

The digging of the bus tunnel itself more or less went fine, as I recall. However there were some very stupid decisions made by Metro that led to the tunnel having to be closed for two years while they replaced the light rail tracks.

Note to anyone that didn't follow that saga - the bus tunnel, when built by Metro (the Seattle transit authority), had light rail track installed as a future-proofing and long term cost-saving move - but when the time came for Sound Transit to start running trains in the tunnel, they first had to shut it down, rip out the old track and replace it. Metro used the excuse that the technology had changed since the original track was laid. But if you read some of Sound Transit's documentation you'll find their testing showed a risk of electrical arcing and fire in the tunnels - Metro had done a piss-poor job and cut too many corners when the tunnel was first built.

No argument there. I was simply pointing out that it was possible. I used to regularly schedule recordings on my VCR, back in the old days... but yeah, it was a royal pain compared to Tivo.

On a side note - I recently was handed a project to "digitize" a VHS video one of our faculty uncovered. As I was doing the whole FF + RW thing (to retension the tape), the tape broke. Fortunately it broke near one of the non-tape sections that attach to the spools, so nothing significant was lost... but taking that thing apart, mending the tape, then hoping and praying it would stay together reminded me just how much I hated messing with those old things. Not to mention how annoyingly difficult a simple task like accurately scrubbing to a particular spot was!

And repairing cassettes was even worse - something I have done on more than one occasion!
