Comment I love giving tech support (Score 1) 606

At work, at home, for friends, and for family. I don't charge anything. I just like (1) to stem the propagation of malware, (2) help people not spend money on over-priced tech support, (3) help people save money on unnecessary computer purchases.

My list of things to do:
Clean the start-up list (I'll be rebooting a bit!)
Remove Malware
Uninstall unused programs
Clear out temporary file caches
Update drivers/codecs/plug-ins
Install useful freeware (Clamwin, Firefox, etc.)
Defragment
If the users want better performance, turn off all the default flashy UI stuff.
Lastly, I assess whether or not a RAM or video upgrade is required to extend the life of the computer for another year or two.

All of this can usually be done (on one computer) between getting home at 6pm and going to bed at 11pm. I like saving people money... even I don't take a piece of the savings.

There is one and only one way of winning in gamling. Luck.
Don't laugh. I know lucky people, and I'm not one of them.
The people I know have gambled a lot their whole life, with quite a profit. Not horse racing or anything where guessing is possible. If you know your math, you'll know that's very very improbalble without luck. Plain luck.

On topic:
I wouldn't hire you if I knew you considered taking the job but refrained to do it because you thought it might hurt your chances of getting other jobs. That is a very questionable moral and hypocritical. Please choose what you want to do with your life based on your own moral judgement.

Nice false equivalency. First, escalating the comparison to rape to seek out an emotional response. Second, comparing hundreds of people making thousands of comments in which a subset were asshats to a situation in which one person's acceptable behavior is irrelevant to their commission of a grievous crime.

Comment DoomRL (Score 1) 460

One problem with many roguelikes is that they are frustratingly difficult (at least for people who don't know exactly what to look out for). One good alternative is DoomRL. Yes, it's Doom in roguelike form, blending FPS and roguelike sensibilities - the game is much more fast-paced than regular roguelikes and much easier to get into. At the same time you not only have a nice skill tree but also a number of challenges ranging from the benign pistols-only "Angel of Marksmanship" to the brutal "Angel of Pacifism" where you can't use weapons (you do get a nuke for killing the Cyberdmon, however).

Add to that a lot of secret levels, unique weapons, weapon and armor mods, mystery levers etc. etc. and you end up with a really nice game with a lot of replay value. Oh, and it has sound and music, too.

Closed yource, though, which is why there are only Windows ans x86 Linux binaries available.

See Isaac Asimov for the exact quote, but it basically says robots may not harm humans.

... and then he writes many stories on how these three laws can be broken, circumvented, mis-interpreted, etc, as do many other authors. I suggest you read some short stories like Robert Sheckley's "The Cruel Equations" that examine how a robots might define what a human is.
