Hopping the Pond

As far as I know, the Brits lost any hope when they gave Hong Kong back of influencing anything on this side of the planet - I'm sure they think they're cute, minimizing the large and maximizing the trivial, but, outside of providing a convenient staging area for our SF units and intel operatives in Europe and some truly classic humor, who needs 'em?

I think calling the Atlantic "the pond" is an Americanism, not a British invention.

The UK "lost all hope" when it gave up the Empire. However, given the choice between being the evil empire, and being reasonably nice but having no influence, I'll take nice any day. Trouble is we've decided the have no influence AND be evil course of action, which is truly foolish.
      • You're right that's its probably an Americanism. I think it got started by the Bomber crews ferrying planes over the Atlantic. As for hope and the UK's worth... I still like 'em. I'd very much like to spend some time travelling throughout the UK, as London, of all the major cities I've visited, is by far my favorite.

I doubt it, since calling an ocean a pond is typical British understatement. Sadly, a quick 'tubes search turned up nothing to back that up.

Embarassing, probably, but undeniably British in origin - why else would Merriam Webster and the O.E.D. both refer to the colloquialism? Speaking of embarassing - I'd almost rather be Canadian than either U.S.-ian (living down to that "Great Satan" label seems to be the shrub's goal...) or Brit these days... a heartfelt apology to the Iraqi people, the occupation is not on my behalf....

Only if you think Satan is a cowardly idiot instead of the Prince of Light who wanted to Lead the Revoltion Against God.

If the second, consider this- the shrub has nuclear devices available, has the capability of completely wiping the middle east off of the planet and joining the Indian and Mediterranian Oceans. But instead, he wants to preserve the oil.....Greed is somewhere between good and evil, it is not totaly evil in and of i

You know, the difference between this company and the Titanic is that the Titanic had paying customers.
