          I wouldn't. I'd rather focus efforts on making it easier for people to get well-educated. The Internet and open source / creative commons open up far better opportunities overall than cheap/free tuition for a few people. The university system itself is mostly a scam, and fast becoming obsolete.

          But the idea that anyone gets a better education at $Prestigious_University than $Cheap_State_School or at ANY institution of "higher learning" is a complete crock of shit. An education is what a person makes of it, and the degrees "earned" from those brand-name schools don't amount to a hill of beans education-wise. What they ARE is an engraved ticket to alumnae functions and a social/professional network made up of people who have

        Family/parents, the public library, and public schools come to mind. Yes, the last 2 cost government money to operate, but the poor and the rich alike can use them equally, so I would count them.

      • so to clarify (i think this is a cool question by the way) you mean free as in 'those who can't afford to pay for it should have it given to them and those who can afford it do pay for it?' because that kind of changes my answer a bit. i guess i misunderstood - because I was thinking more along the lines of 'what shouldn't have a cost attached to it at all?' but you can't do that with water or a lot of other physical things.

      What should be free? Good question... I already read around, so I won't say "clean water" and stuff like that.

      I think it's obvious: since speech is already free... the thing that should be free is... wait for it... BEER!

    • CA state law requires that stations provide free air and water assuming you've filled up at that station. Of course, most stations have the quarter slot, but they are also required to have a sticker on the pump explaining the state law.

  • Air.

    Anything that goes through ANY type of processing -- or requires human intervention HAS to have some type of cost associated with it. This includes:
    • "clean water" (even tap water as someone needs to pay for the pipes, reservoirs, reclamation plants, etc).
    • Education -- who pays the teachers? Buys the land? Buys the books?
    • Food -- Who pays the farmer? The rancher, etc?

    EVERYTHING has a cost -- unless you plan on killing off about 6+ billion people and the few 100k left go back to hunting/gathering. And i
