Journal tomhudson's Journal: Troll Tuesday reminder and Porn Whitelist is BACK 14

Three things -
  1. Remember that tomorrow is Troll Tuesday. Those little [tt]s let us know you're playing :-)
  2. Porn Whitelist is back ... sorry for the delay
  3. I got modded as a Troll 5 times yesterday (not counting the flamebaits, etc) - so how come I'm not banned? From the FAQ:

if a single user is moderated down several times in a short time frame, a temporary ban will be imposed on that user... a cooling off period if you will. It lasts for 72 hours, or more for users who have posted a ton.

I've heard other people (hi TMP, MH42 :-) complaining about sitting in the penalty box ... (mind you, I've still got excellent karma - go figure :-) Anyone got any ideas? Or maybe it'll only hit after midnight tonight, when my account gets turned into a pumpkin ...

  • Maybe the comments you posted were from different IP's? Home and Work?
    • Nope - all from this box (home). Strange ... but maybe it's because several of the troll mods were later upmodded, in which case that means it's possible to survive a "mod bombing" with a little help from our friends.

Didn't feel like posting much today from work - I had to go through over 2000 midi files that I sucked from some site for some decent music for a web app.

I know, web pages with sound SUX. However, I've converted the web site to a web app (everything happens on one page, it doesn't even look l

Yes, that's it. I've been blocked from anon posting with just three troll mods in a 24 hour period, but as soon as one other (any other) post gets an upmod, the ban dissolves.

Since slash is open source, we ought to be able to just look this up, right? The last time I peered into slashcode, though, I was amazed by how difficult it was to understand. The

  • My home subnet has been banned from AC posts for now. But as we all know it's far more fun to post logged in. Oddly enough, it doesn't seem my posts from last Tuesday were the cause though. Instead there was one particular thread where I got modded down five times in a short period of time. This leads me to believe that it's a vendetta someone has. Ho hum. Bored.

Neither rhyme nor reason has any bearing on what happens here. Fate is a fickle bitch. Sometimes she'll ignore your comments moderated as troll for days on end, and sometimes she'll take a quick gander at a single negatively moderated comment and have you banned.

    Question:

Since it is troll tuesday, if one were to get mod points, would people participating and showing their participation with the [tt]
    • Well, you want the troll mods from unsuspecting moderators, so other unsuspecting moderators can counter them with upmods.

It's fun watching a post get a bunch of troll mods and still end up +3 Insightful.

It also stimulates debate, which is what an enlighened troll wants to do. Make people think outside their normal little "box". Piss them off enough to force them to consider alternate viewpoints - even get them so flustered they end up proposing arguments that you can twist around and use against them.

    • Put it anywhere you want.

Maybe today we'll all put it randomly ... we want some to catch on and join in the fun (the ones who we're trolling won't catch on for obvious reasons - you could say "hey, I'm trolling you, asshole, and they won't believe it, just to be contrary ... :-)

    • Good one - I fucked up in the same thread - forgot to put the [tt] in, dammit http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=138715&cid = 11606619 [slashdot.org]

At least they won't have to worry about running Windows and having to put 13 patches into it today like Windows users:

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

  • Closest I've ever gotten to the penalty box is having my 24 hour posts limit reduced to 40. Which is hard to deal with, but can be gotten around with journal entries.
  • Blah [slashdot.org], today seems to be a boring Troll Tuesday. Not many trollable topics.

Computer programmers do it byte by byte.
