Journal semmelbroesel's Journal: How do I get ALL the news on Slashdot? 9

After years of reading as an anonymous coward, I finally decided to sign up for an account since I had found a really weird story to submit. Now, a few days later, I'm still trying to get used to all the features that Slashdot has, and today I stumbled across the Idle section which isn't as useless as you might think - I find it hilarious!
So now my question is: Is there a section in Slashdot where I can get ALL the news, i.e. everything in regular Slashdot AND the "useless" stuff from the Idle section and whatever else I might still be missing?
Not sure if a Journal entry is the way to go to getting an answer, but after looking through the FAQ I couldn't figure out how else to ask a question to Slashdot or their users other than posting it as a story, and I don't think a "support request" like this qualifies ;-)
So, hoping someone reads this and can give me an answer - thanks!

How do I get ALL the news on Slashdot?

  • I had found a really weird story to submit

Submitted stories aren't accepted, as the story submission system is broken. You're better off writing your submission on a stack of money and setting it on fire, as it would have just as good of a chance of being read and accepted that way.

And as you waste more time here, you'll find other things that don't work as well. Some of us enjoy finding new bugs to add to the collection of broken features - although if you really want a challenge, try to find bugs that have actually been fixed (hint I haven't

  • Hey, I wasn't even sure if anyone read these Journals or not (I gotta look around to find where to read those, too, but that's not highest on my priority list). So, thanks for your answers, I found the spot in the preferences, and I noticed that my submitted story never made it out although I did receive points for submitting a story that was posted... Hm... :-) So, if the submitting system is broken, how do these stories get submitted?
    • Hey, I wasn't even sure if anyone read these Journals or not

A few people do. Even fewer read them and leave answers that are worth anything.

I'll let you decide for yourself which of those groups I belong in.

The achievement system is broken, too. Indeed it has been broken ever since it was launched last year on April Fool's Day.

So, if the submitting system is broken, how do these stories get submitted?

That is one of the great mysteries around here.

List of JEs, by date: http://slashdot.org/search.pl?tid=&query=&author=&sort=1&op=journals [slashdot.org]

Also, anytime someone you've friended posts a JE, you'll be notified.

Sure you can do what that Captain Splendid guy tells you, or you can live dangerously and use the firehose, the latest in whiz-bang web 2.0 greatness!

Use the search box at the top: type "journal" then hit "Search". Next, click on "Green" and change it to "Black". Now, you'll see a mix of journal entries and front page stories because that's totally what we searched for, but we're halfway done! Now, at the top of the left side of the screen you should see a list of links for the various sections of slashd

      • Oh. My. God. I had no idea, being one of the more stubborn bastards here, that the firehose was that bad. What the hell is Taco thinking?
  • If you're going to post journals on a regular basis, save yourself the pain and bookmark this link:

    http://slashdot.org/journal.pl?op=edit [slashdot.org]

This gets you to the old web 1.0 journal posting screen without having to chase the write in journal link around the bottom of the screen.

  • Weeeelll... Given the amount of "things-not-quite-working-the-way-they-are-supposed-to", I might just switch myself into read-only mode and leave it at that ;-) For now... Thanks for all the advice and instructions to an obvious newbie! (And to add to the list of non-working items, I have had to refresh this page before it would let me finish writing this, and it deleted all my line breaks in the preview - go figure...)
