With all of the looting that went on by my house, you'd better keep the shotguns. There are some real opportunistic bastards out there with no conscience. Had loads of people driving through the neighborhood to see how bad we (East Rockaway) got hit. Problem was that you couldn't tell them apart from the savages that were looking for where they were going to "visit" later on that night. Generators stolen, aluminum siding, anything resembling a fuel can, just to name a few.

We as a society are doomed if we get hit with a disaster worse than Sandy.

It was a Category 1 Hurricane with Category 2 damage. It hit at high tide with a full moon and it met up with another storm system that was already over the northeast. Take a ride around NJ or the south shore of Long Island or Staten Island and tell me again that it was weak. Also remember that most of the people affected JUST got their homes/lives straigthened out from Irene 13 months prior.

carawmorris writes: "Windows 8 is surely a winner, being the fastest Windows OS ever. Sadly, as with all new Windows OS, third-party software compatibility issues are unavoidable. Therefore, organizations will be hesitant in making the switch to Windows 8 OS, as they may be risking the safety of their encrypted data."

Submission + - Installing Software By Hand (ostatic.com)

An anonymous reader writes: To old school sysadmins, the changing technology landscape looks like a lot of magic and unicorns and pixie dust, full of edge cases and what-ifs. Installing software by hand sometimes seems like the easiest thing to do, but in a few more years it will seem as archaic punched paper tape.

Submission + - Samsung Galaxy S4 Set to Launch in February (ibtimes.co.uk)

DavidGilbert99 writes: "Reports from South Korea suggest Samsung will look to heat up its smartphone battle with Apple by releasing the Galaxy S4 next February, just nine months after the release of the Galaxy S3.

While the details of Samsung's plans have not been revealed officially, company executive and parts suppliers in South Korea have told The Korea Times that the Galaxy S4 will be launched at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013, which is traditionally held in late February.

The phone will have a 5in screen, LTE, and OLED display and use Samsung's own quad-core Exynos processor.

The battle between Apple and Samsung for domination of the global smartphone market is heating up, with the Galaxy S3 selling well and Apple's iPhone 5 reportedly having huge pre-order interest around the world.

Both sides are also involved in patent battles around the globe while all the time doing billions of dollars worth of business with each other."
