  • I was really expecting to hear that mom works in a factory making toys to be exported to the US. Although of course being a farmer in China doesn't mean you aren't being exploited by American companies...

Well, multinational corporations (don't call them "American" when anybody can and does buy stock in them, and often have foreign CEOs) exploit EVERYBODY, but I don't think China exports a whole lot of food. I know a lot of canned mushrooms come from China, and some infant formula. But mushroom "farms" are in caves and abandoned mines (there's one outside Bellvelle, IL in an old coal mine), and infant formula is made in factories.

ADM's slogan "breadbasket to the world" isn't that far from the truth.

      • An increasing amount of produce comes out of China now. I have been seeing a lot of sliced (packed in syrup) Mandarin Oranges of Chinese origin at my local (non-WalMart) grocery store, to name one item in particular.

And for that matter, infant formula starts out as either cow's milk or soy juice, which generally originates in the same country where the finished formula is produced.

Although you're right on the "American" label. A lot of food and/or clothing and/or toy companies that like to call them

You know, I can't think of a single publicly owned company or product made by a corporation that coud be said to be American. Budweiser isn't even American any more, even though the original Busch brewery in St Louis is still running; the Busch family sold the business to Europeans (take that, Euro-beer snobs!). Toyotas are as much American cars as Fords are; there are factories here, but parts for them come from all over the world.

The companies that are non-Chinese are also non-American and non-European.

          • On the topic of cars, I recall there was a time when there was a Mazda that was actually the "most American" car on the road; it had the largest percentage of American-made parts, and was assembled in the US by UAW employees. I don't know which cars have the largest percentage of American-made parts now; I haven't looked at new cars in a long, long time.

But on the matter of the parents for this story, it is slightly easier to imagine a non-exploited farmer than most other professions, as someone who desc

    But I said dear doctor
I think that it's you instead
Because I have got a thing
    That's unique and new
    It proves that I'll have
    The last laugh on you
    'Cause instead of one head
    I got two
And you know two heads are better than one.
