Journal TechnoLust's Journal: Blinder, I now know how you feel... 32

The HR manager called me into the office today. He said, "It has come to our attention that have accepted another job. Have you decided on a start date?" I told them no. They said that I had two options. Option 1) they fire me. Option 2) I resign and they pay me until August 15th and then give me a lump sum for accrued vacation time (I have 6 days left) and my benefits continue until then. Then they wished me "all the best". It felt like when a girl knows you are waiting for the right moment to dump her and she does the pre-emptive breakup.

I'm scared but excited. I think they are doing something shady though, because we are supposed to have a thing called PIP that they do before we are fired. They haven't done that to me yet, so I'm trying to figure out how they are getting around that. There's a number I can call to ask questions about things like that. I'm going to call it and see what's what. I'll keep you posted.

UPDATE: Just got the letter. They are paying me through the 12th (that's a Friday)with full benefits. I don't have to come to work tomorrow, except to bring back my security badge and the skeleton key they didn't know I had. :-) (Yes, I COULD have gotten back in untraced and done whatever I wanted, but I'm an honorable person. Stop giggling, Renee! :-) )

    • Resign. Tennessee isn't a right to work state, so they can fire you for wearing a shirt they don't like. They only did this to prevent an uprising. I have quite a few friends here in vital roles and most of them are already unhappy.
      • Washington is 'at will' as well. The only place where being fired has any bearing is with Unemployment. If you are fired with cause or resign you don't get unemployment. If you are fired for no good reason you can.

(as a side note my former employer is trying to claim I was fired for cause and thus screw me out of unemployment, grrr)
        • Unfortunately, that is SOP for many employers. The more claims that are paid out, the more their rates go up (naturally). My understanding is that Employment Security[1] is fully aware of this, and takes such claims with a large grain of salt, and will insist that they produce proof if you fight it. Sucks though. Good luck with it.

[1]For those not familiar with the Evergreen State, that's what we call that state agency you deal with when you have neither employment nor security.

          • A few years back the Canadian government changed the name from Unemployment Insurance to Employment Insurance.

I've run into this before outside of the tech industry but this is the first time I've had a tech employer pull this. Then again it would appear my former employer has extremely
  • Maybe they heard how you treat defenseless waitresses?

(BTW, if she is the right person, the lack 'o' tip could be hella funny)
  • (Only saying that because NeighNeigh brought it to our attention numerous times how much it displeases her. :^)

But, then again, your company is dodgy all around. Glad you're getting out now. (And hopefully the Ohio job will indeed be taking you on in late August.)
    • for the record it was the man on the receiving end of that one. ew
      • Ow. I only read one article about the case, and that wasn't made clear, so I just assumed the man to be the penetrater (sounds like some sort of super villian- behold the Penetrator!), because horse penes are...rather large. I can't even imagine the lostics of that one.
        • That's why the guy died. It was internal bleeding due to a burst colon. It happened about 20 miles from my house! Ack!

The deal is that apparently there was an animal "brothel" over there, and people came (no pun intended) from all over the nation to have sex with animals, and either get watched or watch other people having sex with animals. They've found hundreds of hours of videotape!! (ack again).

Within hours a law was being written up, as there was no law against it here. It's expected to pass.

    • They are paying me for 3 weeks to not work. My pay is greater than unemployment, and expect to be in Ohio by then or soon after, so I think I'm better off that way. Even if the Ohio thing were to fall through for some bizzare reason, I have a backup plan 20 miles from my house for $7k more than I'm making now. I want to go to Ohio, though, so I'm hoping that nothing screws that up. I don't know what that would be, but I don't want to challenge it and find out, so I'll admit it is out there and maybe it w
      • Yea, sounds like layoff is the best bet. Esp. since you have a backup plan. Also there is a waiting period before you get unemployment in most states and as you said you should be in Ohio by then.

Good luck, and have fun watching your former employer spiral down the drain from a afar.
    • Why not contact the Ohio folks and let them know when you'll be available? Maybe they can find a way to get you on the payroll. At the very least, they might be able to get you into some training or something. If memory serves, most corporate places have a certain number of CEUs you're supposed to accrue each year, anyway -- you could get a head start on the fiscal year.

      ....Bethanie....
      • Yeah, I'm going to do that tomorrow. He wanted me to rework my resume (so it's to get contract programming work, not a corp job) and send it to him. I sent it to Josh and Koria to look over and will send the final draft tomorrow.
  • Wow. Too bad TN isn't a Right-to-Work state.

It makes me wonder, however, how your boss became aware of your other offer, if you hadn't given them a resignation letter yet stating a last day.

All night Party At TL's! HE ain't gotta go to werk!

  • ...is with tomorrow being your last day, how many times between now and when you head north, they call you about problems they are having. Being how they just treated you, I hope you give them no help what so ever.

When I left my last place, which I left voluntarily and on good terms (or so I think at least), I gave them like 4 pages of usernames and passwords, websites of items I maintained for the company, and a couple of hastily scribbled procedures for computer issues that I had been dealing with. • Um, I found out actually today was my last day, so I'm not answering their calls anymore. :-)
      • yeah leave 'em cold turkey..and let them figure out what they need... you no longer have any sort of responsibility to "assist" them with issues that arise. In working as a consultant the only thing I do when leaving a client is provide them with root/admin passwds...the rest they can get someone else to figure out, and if they call...billable time =)
  • So he sends his resignation with 2 weeks notice. The boss accepts and everything seems ok. 2 days later people start showing up in his office saying they are going to take one of his two large LCD monitors. He says no way and shoo's them off. Next day, they add someone to his office. Move a desk in and everything. My friend didn't say anything but his friends did, (not I, I dont work there). And the boss comes back to his office "really concerned" about the employee sharing his office and that he will take
  • Hey TL... well, this was going to happen sooner or later... but yeah... just like me, you would have prefered to do this on your own terms. i get that.

i wish that as well... but you know what? i'm pretty happy. i'm in boston now... i'll be here through next week... i have interviews lining up... with interesting jobs (all senior/leadership roles) that pay well... and i'm in boston! my house is on the market... and well... i'ma gonna journal about this in a minute.

but yeah man... i hear ya
  • But this just happened to me to. Only I hadn't accepted another offer. They just found out I was looking.

It sucks to pack up your desk in 4 hours...
