  • Not all grocery stores carry real northern maple syrup. What's wrong with you people?

Let me guess. Maple-flavored high fructose corn syrup instead?

    *sigh*

People who are responsible for the existence of stuff like that should be executed by a "firing squad" made up of people throwing bricks.

    • How about being boiled in their own high-fructose corn syrup?

That stuff is hard to avoid. It was in the stuffing mix that I was going to buy the other day. WTF? I just wanted something quick, that I did not have to make from scratch (no time for chopping celery and onions and tearing bread and whatnot). Cranberry-ginger pork chops with stuffing. Yum. :-) And made out of stuff that I already had in the refrigerator. Cranberry sauce keeps forever.

OK, enough rambling. Death to the HFCS-mongers
    • I just figured that out!

My inlaws came down (from Maine) to Cincy for Christmas. They gave me a waffle iron and some freshly made maple syrup from New Hampshire they got on the way.

First batch of waffles, I added the syrup. SWEET SHIT! THAT'S WHAT MAPLE SYRUP SHOULD TASTE LIKE? ITS FANTASTIC!!!

Unfortunately, its a double edged sword. Yeah, they got me a ton of syrup, so I should be good for a couple months, but a tiny container of it at my local supermarket runs over $10.
      • Yes, it is expensive but well worth the money. And a little goes a long way...

My parents are coming over for a visit in May and one of the things on my wish list is real maple syrup, though it seems that it's not that much more expensive here than over there :-/

      • I find that most of what's sold in the states tends to be "Dark Amber"*. When I was in Canada I had "Light Amber". Oh my! It's much thinner than the "Dark Amber" and not quite as sweet. And it's *wonderful*.

[*] "Light Amber" and "Dark Amber" are grades of maple syrup and reflect how long it has been cooked. Darker syrups have been cooked longer, are stickier, and have more caramelization.

    • Personally, give me Mrs. Butterworth's any day. Sacrelidge, I know, but every time I've paid money for that nasty overpriced tree sap, it's tasted like soap to me.
  • 21. It is now VERY very difficult for me to find restaurant foods i can eat (as opposed to merely very difficult)

What's the story behind that one?
  • Like the Lola in Damn Yankees? You know, "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets..." IIRC, Lola was a demon of some kind...
    • Lola! you know as in "Run Lola Run"

      /blinder blushes

um... its the name of my car... hehe... she's german and likes to run! yay!

      • Lola is lovely, and if i were involved with anyone, i'd leave them in a heartbeat for your car, if your car would consent to eloping. Of course, then you'd be carless, so i understand your having forbid her the chance.

        *sigh*

lola's purty. And i'm not the kind of dragon who goes for cars.

        blinder's car has a posse.

      • Okay, you so know your movies... and if your Porsche doesn't run like Lola in Lola run, nothing will run like Lola ;-)

If only I had your car for a day.... ;-))

    • That one Damn Yankees song is awesome. Can't get enough Ted Nugent soloing and chewing gum in a hail of gunfire.

      "He's gonna solo! Open Fire!"
  • What did you bring us? Did you get us some cool stuff? Brought enough for everyone, right?

  • 16. I don't like shoot-'em-up video games. I prefer strike-them-with-lightning-from-afar videogames.

Yeah, lightning bolts aren't bad at all, but i personally prefer fireballs. Roll for your lives, mortals!

    • i personally prefer fireballs

But only in open spaces. Remember, 33,000 ft^3 is bigger than you think when you're in a 10' square tunnel...

      • See, that's why you're strongly advised to delay it and teleport the fuck out* before it goes off.

        * preferrably taking any friendlies with you

    • Yeah, lightning bolts aren't bad at all, but i personally prefer fireballs. Roll for your lives, mortals!

Pah. Fireballs are for little kids. Real adults wield Thundercougafalconballs.

      I've wield Thundercougafalconballs. Do you?

Plan on drinking 12 ounces of water for each half hour you're singing.

Liquid quantities are measured by volume, not by mass. At least in part to avoid confusion... is that Avoirdupois ounces, Troy ounces, Imperial fluid ounces, or US fluid ounces? Each refer to a different quantity. Which could, of course, be a reason for using SI units, rather than measuring by volume instead of mass. But the point being, you buy liquid in pints or litres, not by the ounce. It just seems a strange way to refer to it...

    • Most cans or small bottles of water or soda are sold in fluid ounces. 12 ounce cans, 20 or 24 ounce bottles.
    • In this case, standard US usage would make it about 0.35 litres. It's interesting that some sizes are now standard in litres (3-liter soft drinks, wine and liquor in 750 ml or 1.5 l sizes (some in 1.0 l)), but others remain strictly in gallons (gasoline, for instance). I would think that the oil companies would make the jump, since paying $0.53 per liter would be a psychological advantage over $2.00 per gallon.
      • It's all about money. Think of how many gas stations there are on your drive home. Think of home many pumps that the computers and faces would have to be converted. Now think of paying $500-$2000 per ROAD SIGN to change the face to say $_____ / liter instead of $______9 / gallon. (I've never unserstood that last 9 anyway, why not just round up damnit? They don't want to pay to do that. IIRC they tried to switch once before and people were pissed because they saw the price per liter and thought it was
        • (I've never unserstood that last 9 anyway, why not just round up damnit?

My dad used to own a gas station, and I can tell you the answer is simple. It's the same reason we have other prices ending in .99 or .95 -- the old psychological trick of 0.99 seeming "loads cheaper" than $1.

(Yes, they also tack on .9 Eurocents to liter gas prices here as well.)

Some places have even started ending their prices in .8 cents, just to get a bit sillier.

As for the cost of gas stations changing over to liters, it's

    • Nah, over here we seem to have this unit of US fluid ounces we use to refer to quantities of liquid, which I believe is standardized to units of volume for water. I believe that 12 ounces of water here in the good ol' US is about 355 mL. I also seem to be under the impression that a fluid ounce here just refers to the volume one ounce of water would take up at STP, and is then applied regardless of liquid, but I'm not certain. Frankly it's gallons of gas and fluid ounces listed for nearly every other consum
      • 1 litre of water= 1.05 Quarts

and as everyone knows with water... a pint is a pound, the whole world round...

Ya, i know, who uses pounds anymore except as a british currency??

        8 ounces is a cup, 2 cups= 1 pint, 2 pints= 1 quart, 4 quarts = 1 gallon.

We could make it more complicated, but we'd have to work for it.

        • by Tet ( 2721 )
We could make it more complicated, but we'd have to work for it.

Oh, you already have made it more complicated. For example, 8 (presumably fluid) ounces in a cup, 2 cups to a pint. 8 x 2 = 16, last time I looked. How does that fit with the 20 fluid ounces that are to be found in a pint? And your 1.05 quarts to the litre? How does that work when a litre is smaller than a quart? And as for "a pint is a pound, the whole world round", well that's not actually true anywhere, except accidentally or in contrived

  • I guess it lived up to expectation then... or what there is. For now everyone seems to agree that I'm not really what they expect. Or, in thinking about it, I'm more of what they should've expected. Who knew?

"There is this guy... that I know... and, funny you should mention it, but he once..."

    I'm glad I didn't disappoint :p
    • you were exactly what i expected, but then, i'd been warned about you.

      *grin*

Warning: sielwolf looks like a white power poster child, only handsomer. He also acts like one, except that when abusing the waitstaff, race, religion, creed, and kevlar armour don't matter. You will be intimidated.

That, and he watches more movies than you do. Obscure ones. Over and over again. Just to mess you up.

But... he has better fashion sense than i do.

Evil liked him. Good was disturbed. Wicked and Mr. Henries were busy w
  • Except for the tattoo thing (not by bag baby) and the drinking thing (my bag baby), that Blinder seems an awful lot like me. I have a katrillion movies too and, you know what (Blinder, are ya listening?) ? When HD-DVD becomes standard: They're ALL obsolete .

    How d'ya like them apples?

Big fat worm-ridden ones I say. blech.

    Hi Sol! :)
    • Hi, sweetie!!

Blinder got me to start my fledgeling dvd collection. Star wars, of course. *sigh*

Tattoos (not my thing) and music (my thing) mean that you and i are separated by 1 degree of Blinderism.

      *grin*

There should be like a 24 item list or something so we can play the 24 degrees of Blinder. If you don't drink, don't smoke, have tattoos, are a star wars fan club member, own a porsche, powerbook, ipod, or SG...

      hm.

      don't drink alcohol
      or smoke
      have tattoos
      are vegetarian
      no recreational drugs

      • Rats. I'm only an 11. I suck. But you're cool, so that's good! :)
      • oh man... my sides are hurting! this was brilliant! i wouldn't change a thing... um... boy that sounds bad... hehehe :-D

yeah... a 14... sounds pretty decent i should think.

its funny i think i got a hit on each line item... oh wait...

      • I score a 6 on the blinder scale, meaning I am no closer to blinder than I am to Kevin Bacon.

Even so, that 6 is only because, as I am not part of a happy couple, I would enjoy setting said happy couples on fire. I fear that if I were coupled I might only get a 5.

Well....even then I'd still think pukey cute couples should be shot. Is that close enough? I don't want to watch them be all cute while they burn...

        • Burning happy couples leave happy little ashes which still have to be kicked into the wind. I prefer hitting them with an RPG and seeing them convert into a fine red mist which no longer seems to harbor any emotional content whatsoever.

          Bitter? No, never.
      • I have like two degrees on him which might not explain why we're so chappy. My DVD collection is only about 140. But I doubt many people have copies of Kanto Wanderer or Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter.

Kind of like CDs. A lot of people have more... but mine is better. No bookends in my collection :p
      • I score about 6. I'm still not capable of running 2 miles at a time, but i'm working on it (two and a half kilometers three times a week is a start)
      • SG

        SG? suicidegirls.com? Dunno.

        Anyways, I score a big fat six.^-^
        • hehehe... "SG" in this case would be an electric guitar manufactured by Gibson USA.

a six eh? not too shabby.

i'm starting to get afraid though.
          • Well, I don't drink, smoke, or drug. I also like punk, relish swearing, and enjoy immolation.^-^

            Pheer moi.
            • You don't drug? I could've sworn that would explain you. :)

hey, and where did this "vi sucks thing" start? I'm gonna whoop some butt once I post this comment and find out who dared spake against (pronounce: a-GAYNst) vi.
              • On *nix, I use nano/pico and KDevelop.

On *doze, I use UltraEdit-32 and Crimson Editor.

Learning vi or emacs does not interest me extremely.;)
                • pico starts with 'p' for a reason.

                  IDE's are evil.

UltraEdit is ok, but very quirky and auto-indenting bites really hard.

emacs is for mental patients only (usually extreme psychotic disorders).

Crimson Editor seems an apropos name for you. ;)

vim is the only editor worth using.

These overbearing and pompous opinions brought to you by the letter 7.
              • I used to use pico. Now that I finally have a computer fast enough to be in a gui all the time, I use kwrite as my text editor. The advantage of kwrite (or kate or kedit) over pico is that I can edit files on other boxen using the "fish://" url in the open file dialog.
      • Eh, cat's dead.

And I've got an HMX Strat.
      • I'm with daoine on the whole obnoxious cuteness thing. The question is really what gets done to them before they get set on fire.

Fire: It's not just for disposing of the remains.

      • Yay. I have 9 degrees of Blinderism. Maybe 11 on technicalities (I think I probably have a zippo somewhere, and I swear more than I used to).

I haven't counted my DVDs, but I'm guessing it's more around the 100 mark than 250. I have plenty of digital music (70GB or so), but an ipod? Ugh, no thanks. Also, define recreational drugs. Does alcohol count? How about adreneline?

        • Does alcohol count?

it sure does. no drinking :)
and when *i* say "no drinking" that means not ever. not even a glass of wine with dinner... it means... not a drop ever in my whole 31 years of life.

yeah... that's a tough one... i know. its also weird too i reckon.
          • it's not weird, and it's not bad, but i think you should include people who've sworn off alcohol forever, whether they used to drink or not. Maybe after they've done a year without it, just to prove they're serious.

            I'll never be one.

            *shrug*

hey, go easy on me, i cleaned my fridge last night and there's only about 4 gallons of alcohol left in it.

            Yeah, you heard me right.

            31 seems so... young...

              yes!!!! this counts... without question.

              I'll never be one.

              yay! that's cool. really.

          • it sure does. no drinking :)

Yeah, I know you don't drink. At all. Much like me and smoking[1]. But since alcohol was already covered by a separate point (which I failed), I was wondering if it should be included under recreational drugs. If someone doesn't drink, but does mainline heroin, then they get 1 degree of Blinderness. But if they drink but don't do other drugs, then they get 0? Doesn't seem entirely fair :-)

[1] No smoking for me. Not even an experimental puff in my adolescence. I've just never

          • Yet you have b33r in your fridge! Beer in cans no less! And there is one beer missing!

I'm bizarro Blinder, and I approved this message.
      • Hmmm....a 4.5

I tossed in a half point because I own a couple of "little Porsches" as Bodak would attest to. No worries, he has a "little BMW" as well. And Bodak continues to harrass me until I assume he convinces me to ignore all other monetary responsiblities and buy one.

DVDs are just insane in the house. Bodak and I both have cabinets that can hold something like 250 dvds, and we both have piles of movies around that wouldn't fit in the cabinet. I have only just started going through his cabinet and w

  • Hey, what's wrong with VA maple syrup. I like it better then that yankee watery stuff..lol.

And no, I'm not a southern biggot. I actually like being up north better... except in the winter. If only I could afford a house up north for summer and a winter house down south... Both stocked with VA maple syrup from Eagle Sugar Camp.
