Journal M.C. Hampster's Journal: Petals Around the Rose 14

Little puzzle-type game for you to try.

The funniest thing about it was the responses from the three people I instant messaged with the link:

  1. A male programmer friend of mine figured it out right away.
  2. My sister said "Petals around a rose? Dice? This doesn't make any sense." She managed to get one guess right (she didn't really figure out the puzzle) and then she changed the topic, giving up completely.
  3. My wife said "I hate these things, what's the answer."

For the record, it took me a few minutes to figure it out. Of course, on the page it says one guy's theory is that the smarter you are, the longer it will take.

  • didn't take me too long. I got the first 2 guesses wrong and figured it out after that. Obviously this is one of those-- the simpler you are the quicker you will get it things.

I am now going to start feeling smug anyway-- because I have to grab the joy wherever I can find it. I'm just happy I figured something out-- regardless of the implications.
  • Because I figured it out in about 2.5 seconds.

Gotta go. There's a shiny object over there...

    • Actually, even stoopider, because I "got" it the first time around, but managed to miscount on the first try, so my first guess was wrong...and that threw me off for a while. Eventually I decided to try my initial theory again, and it worked.

      Cheers,

  • I hate this game. I tried it once about a year ago. I never figured out what was supposed to be the point. Add them all up? Divide by something? Take the smallest number and add the largest? And what the hell does the petals around the rose name have to do with the game (if anything)?

    • I know the solution if you would like me to tell you. FortKnox put this in a JE a while back with hints, if you'd like to try that first. If you want to know the answer, email me.
      • I figured it out way back when FK posted about it. Took me about 10 minutes, a page full of scribbled out functions, and a sudden feeling of utter stupidity that I didn't get it earlier.
        • See.... I'm about to start scribbling down things... like # of odd dice rolls vs # of even dice rolls..... (dammit, doesn't work).... add up every other dice.... (also doesn't work)....

And the real problem is that I don't think my brain works in such a way that I could figure this out. But what is worse is that I want to figure it out...

    • I couldn't figure it out until I came across another site that pointed out what should've been obvious. As soon as I had read it I went back and could solve it.

"The name of the game is Petals Around the Rose. The name is very important. For each roll of the dice, there is one answer, and I will tell you that answer."

  • I figured it out in about a minute.. Funny thing was, I thought it was one thing, counted wrong, then found out that's what it really was :)

There is another game called "What can you fit through the green glass door?" that is kind of similar.
  • keep it simple and you'll get it, I like quick little brain-teasers
  • I found this article very interesting.

  • I don't know whether to feel like a genius for figuring it out, a minor moron because it took less than a year, or a major moron for figuring it out in less than 10 minutes.

Skip reading if you don't want a clue:

It's a visual game, not a mathematical one.

since his damn app won't display correctly in my browser, I got no chance. (for the record, the first roll was all ones, I guessed 5, and it said "wrong" but the mis-displayed answer appeared to be 5. I got no clue, and no time for bad coding :-)
  • Yes, the name of the game is important. I was close in my guess, but at the same time way off. If I hadn't given into the power of Google Answers, I might've figured it out on my own eventually.

    I feel dirty now.
