Comment Bill Gates wasn't your typical nerd... (Score 1) 539

Just thought I would point out the following:

"He was nothing but a nerdy college kid messing with computers in his garage when he struck it rich, and now he is at the apex."

He was indeed a nerdy college kid, that is without dispute. But he was also at Harvard at the time, and he did not exactly come from a humble background. His father was a prominent lawyer, and his mother was on the board for a bank and the US United Way.

By no means is Bill Gates a moron, and certainly his upbringing was not a total pre-requisite to his success. But much of his later success was probably stoked by having access to a computer from his high-end prep school, and his family connections were certainly not a hindrance to his admission to Harvard. (High SAT scores themselves certainly don't get you into Harvard, and Bill Gates certainly didn't win admission through his social skills.)

Just nit-picking here though... overall your post is excellent!

Actually... it's more like saying that the person who built your house (that YOU own) says that he doesn't want OJ Simpson in the house that YOU own. And actively stops you from having him as a guest.

No, it would be like the person who built your house not offering to call OJ for you to come over. You are still free to invite OJ over yourself.

Except OJ demands a fee for his appearances - and the person who built your house is doing everything they can to stop OJ from offering you the chance to pay his appearance fee and have him come over... Because OJ doesn't know you personally and knows you only want him over because he's famous...

And then the person who built your house has a deal going with Dennis Rodman and tries to encourage you to have him come over instead.

False. (but they will suspend you if they have reason to think you are under 18)

> Then linden labs started required age verification (credit card, etc) to enter into "adult" areas of the world

1. age verification was never required. 2. It was never used. 3. it was to be up to the "owners" of the property to allow verified or non-verified users.

Pedo-hysteria was running wild in the Media more so in SL

That was the governments doing.. You could cash out RL money, so the credit card companies would be put at risk if they dealt with SL

Submission + - eBay hacker keeps busting through site's back door

pacopico writes: A hacker specializing in eBay cracks has once again managed to masquerade as a company official on the site's message boards, according to this story on The Register. A company spokesman denies that "Vladuz's" repeated assaults on eBay point to a larger problem with the site's security. Of course, eBay two days ago claimed to have found a way to block Vladuz altogether, only to see him pop up again. Is eBay Vladuz the online version of the Exxon Valdez?
