Submission + - Facebook's AI Algorithms Accused of Generating Terror Content

wiredmikey writes: Facebook is unwittingly auto-generating content for terror-linked groups that its artificial intelligence systems do not recognize as extremist, according to a complaint made public on Thursday.

Submission + - French Gas Stations Robbed After Forgetting to Change Gas Pump PINs (zdnet.com)

An anonymous reader writes: French authorities have arrested five men who stole over 120,000 litres (26,400 gallons) of fuel from gas stations around Paris by unlocking gas pumps using a special remote. The five-man team operated with the help of a special remote they bought online and which could unlock a particular brand of gas pumps installed at Total gas stations.

The hack was possible because some gas station managers didn't change the gas pump's default lock code from the standard 0000. Hackers would use this simple PIN code to reset fuel prices and remove any fill-up limits. Crooks would operate in small teams of two to three individuals who visited gas stations at night using two vehicles. A man in a first car would use the remote to unlock the gas station, and then a second car, usually a van, would come along seconds later to fill a giant tanker installed in the back of the vehicle with as much as 2,000 or 3,000 litres in one go.

Submission + - Ocasio-Cortez: Be 'Excited' About 'Being Automated Out Of Work (dailywire.com) 1

Munky101 writes: According the the Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, people should be excited about being automated out of work.
"Ocasio-Cortez made the remarks while speaking at the left-leaning South by Southwest Conference & Festival in Austin, Texas — where she also said America was in a state of "garbage" and suggested that former President Ronald Reagan was a racist.

"We should not be haunted by the specter of being automated out of work," Ocasio-Cortez said. "We should not feel nervous about, you know, the toll booth collector not having to collect tolls anymore."

"We should be excited by that," Ocasio-Cortez continued. "But the reason we’re not excited by it is because we live in a society where if you don’t have a job, you are left to die, and that is at its core a problem. And so there are a lot of different solutions— a lot of different proposed, uh, ideas about how we go about that."

Ocasio-Cortez then appeared to support Bill Gates' idea of "taxing robots at 90 percent," explaining: "what that means— what he’s really talking about is taxing corporations at 90 percent, um, but it’s easier to say tax a robot."

Submission + - Scientists Turn Docile Mice Into Ruthless Hunters

BenBoy writes: A couple of years ago, a story surfaced about smarter mice: Scientists Create Super-intelligent Mice, Discover They're Also Very Laid Back. Well, implicit challenge accepted! 2017 brings us a report from Cell, via The Scientist:

Neural circuits in the amygdala are responsible for predatory behavior in mice, according to a study published January 12 in Cell. Using optogenetics, a technique that uses light to turn neural circuits on and off, a group of researchers led by neuroscientist Ivan de Araujo of Yale University was able to turn docile mice into ruthless hunters.

Nuclear death-mice are, we assume, right around the corner ...
