Southwest Airlines operates nearly 820 Boeing aircraft and has more than 3000 flights per day. And they *only* operate Boeing aircraft.

I don't at all find it surprising that if you actually looked you could find incidents for Southwest pretty much any day of the year, at that operational tempo - and of course all of them are going to be involving Boeing aircraft....

Engines are the responsibility of the engine manufacturer, but often cowlings (which is what failed here) are not. These are highly optimised coverings for the engine which have a big effect on airflow efficiencies, and are often designed by the aircraft manufacturer rather than the engine manufacturer (the engine manufacturer often designs the intake, as that has a lot of effect on the engine efficiency itself).

But this is a 737NG, been in service for years, so its probably a maintenance issue or failed part rather than a design defect.

People need to stop highlighting every failure of a Boeing aircraft now, the vast majority of the ones we have seen talked about this year have nothing to do with Boeing or its culture, and instead are pretty normal failures that wouldnt have been talked about prior to the MAX issues. There are thousands of flights a day, sometimes shit does happen a few times a year - the last time this type of failure was featured on a prime time news segment it had nothing to do with Boeings culture, and it doesnt this time either

Just because a part failed does not mean there is an inherent culture or cost cutting issue, in either the construction or maintenance.

That'd be fine for the people who live downtown, but you're forgetting about all the commuters.

That's probably a long way off, too. Right now, robotaxis are only allowed on a limited range of public roads, which doesn't include highways (and by extension, bridges and tunnels). So while they might be useful to get you from your home in a city neighborhood to downtown, but not much more than that.

(Also, I doubt anybody's really going to pay for robotaxis for a daily commute. Most people buy cars or take the train for that.)

The "Alternative Marketplaces" that are already in Apple's approval queue to launch imminently in the EU are filled with emulators.

The problem here is that the open app ecosystem available to the EU creates a massive disparity between the capabilities of the platform there vs everywhere else in the world. The headlines about emulators coming to EU iPhones have been going for a few weeks now. If you can run emulators in Europe but not in the US, users simply are not going to stand for it.

I was going to say the Apple is about to have their Lunch eaten, but in the context of gradeschool cafeteria analogies, it's really more like they are the bully and they finally got their nose punched in by the little scrawny kid.. only that kid was the EU and maybe not so scrawny. Keep it up!

Walk down any town in Ireland and you'll come across a "turf accountant." Sports betting in Ireland is everywhere. Same in the UK.

I grew up in the US and was there till my late 20s leaving in 1998. But even when I go back, sports betting there is nothing like here.

If anything, the US hides sports betting and has an unhealthy underground relationship with it. Put it out in the open and be honest about it.

Oh, and there's no such warning. When you get into the backseat of a robotaxi, it won't even start moving until everybody is wearing their seatbelts. I hardly see any passenger leaping into the front seat and grabbing the controls in a traffic incident.

Nah. I've rode a couple of robotaxis around the city, and while the ride is nice, it's clear we're nowhere near "get in a car and go to sleep." For one thing, the vehicles aren't even allowed on highways yet. And they require months of training on any particular urban area before they can perform reliably. I don't think there's been any training in rural or even suburban environments, which have different challenges. What you say may eventually be possible, but we're still a long way off.

You forget that Boeing (and Lockheed) both got quite a way down the path of designing supersonic passenger aircraft to rival Concorde, only stopping when government money dried up.

Of course, the American alternative needed to be better, so it started iff as a swing wing mach 3 design which vastly increased costs and complexity - ultimately, the final Boeing design looked surprisingly similar as Concorde and had pretty much identical operating specs.

Concorde was designed for a purpose, and so was the 747 - as such, you cant really compare the two without taking the design considerations into account. No supersonic aircraft is going to be as efficient as a subsonic one, thats just basic physics.
