Submission + - Equifax settlement gets even worse (time.com)

LatencyKills writes: I, like many people, were victims of the Equifax breach. In the settlement, I opted for the cash payout rather than fatten the coffers of Equifax under the guise of credit monitoring, only to later learn that it would not reach the promised payout of $125 because they had not set enough cash aside in the settlement. Still, cash, even $5, is cash. Today, I received an email which reads in part:

"According to our records, you filed a claim for alternative compensation of up to $125 in connection with the Equifax data breach settlement and certified on the claim form that you had some form of credit monitoring or protection in place and will continue to have the credit monitoring in place for a minimum of six months from the date of your claim filing.
You must either verify or amend your claim by October 15, 2019.

If you do not, your claim for alternative compensation will be denied."

So the settlement judge, no doubt luxuriating in his or her new mansion funded through untraceable Cayman Island funds, had decided to further screw the victims of Equifax. Well done!

Submission + - AMD Releases it's Rome Second Generation EPYC CPUs (anandtech.com)

SolarAxix writes: Today, AMD released it's Rome Second Generation EPYC CPUs, the AMD EPYC 7001 & 7002 series. Was the hype real? According to Anandtech's review of the top of the line EPYC 7742 with 64 cores and 128 threads dual CPU system (for a total of 128 cores and 256 threads), it seems to be the case:

"...So has AMD done the unthinkable? Beaten Intel by such a large margin that there is no contest? For now, based on our preliminary testing, that is the case. The launch of AMD's second generation EPYC processors is nothing short of historic, beating the competition by a large margin in almost every metric: performance, performance per watt and performance per dollar. Submission + - Those Blue LEDs That We All Love? Stop Looking At Them

Isao writes: It (apparently) has been known that blue light damages eyes and accelerates macular degeneration. A new article on phys.org may have identified how this happens.

It seems that unlike other light colors, blue causes a necessary molecule (retinal) to permanently kill photoreceptor cells. From the article: "The researcher found that a molecule called alpha tocoferol, a Vitamin E derivative and a natural antioxidant in the eye and body, stops the cells from dying. However, as a person ages or the immune system is suppressed, people lose the ability to fight against the attack by retinal and blue light."

The authors will continue their research and recommend filtering and blue light reduction in the meantime.
