Submission + - A microscopic alphabet soup

Roland Piquepaille writes: "UCLA researchers have produced microscale particles shaped like each letter of the alphabet. They've used 'lithoparticles' — microscale and nanoscale particles that can have a wide range of material compositions — to create this microscopic alphabet. They even can choose a specific font to create these colloidal letters, made of solid polymeric materials dispersed in a liquid solution. These letters could be used to 'mark' individual cells or for new medical applications. With the right microscope at home, you could even play Scrabble with these letters... Read more for additional references and a picture of this alphabet soup."

Submission + - Is Google planning a national wireless network?

eastbayted writes: Amid the buzz surrounding Google's rumored plans to release a mobile phone, the Daily Wireless has posted an interesting article citing eight reasons why the search behemoth may very well be planning to build a nationwide wireless network. Among them: Google has made hefty investments in dark fiber; it's already offering free wireless in Mountain View and has offered to do the same in San Francisco; and it's fighting hard to maintain Net neutrality.

Submission + - Top researcher:'Untested' vaccine could harm (HPV)

An anonymous reader writes: According to WorldnetDaily :

"A researcher who worked on a vaccine for the human papillomavirus is warning that it hasn't been tested on young girls, is "silly" for states to mandate the vaccination, and in a worst-case scenario could even increase cervical cancer rates."

...

"And she warned more than 40 cases of Guillian-Barre syndrome — an immune disorder that results in tingling, numbness and even paralysis of the muscles — have been reported in girls who got the HPV vaccine in combination with a meningitis vaccine.
"

This topic has recently been discussed on slashdot and to my knowledge this is the first information about negative side effects and poor testing methods to be made public.
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - City council in New Zealand takes itself to court

El Cubano writes: "The New Zealand Herald is carrying a story titled Council prosecutes itself, pays fine into own coffers. Yes, it really is what you think. The council actually sued itself in court. The most telling thing is how proud of themselves they are for "doing the right thing":

"We feel vindicated by this decision," said councillor Vanessa Neeson, who is chairman of the planning and regulatory committee. The council had been mocked for prosecuting itself but it was showing that it was not above the law, she said.

Journal Journal: Slashdotters need Help with Story Submissions 7

While I am perhaps not the best person to talk about this as I've only had one submission accepted, my recent time spent with the Firehose has demonstrated to me that most people have a hard time crafting an acceptable story submission, in spite of the numerous examples on the front page. The following is just a list of hints and tips that might help someone assemble a story submission that makes sense.

Journal Journal: Good reasoning 2

I finally heard a good excuse for Haliburton to move to Dubai. Apparently we don't have an extradition treaty there. So if the Democrats finally get off their ass and start prosecuting war profiteering, the CEO of Haliburton will be able to avoid extradition.

Submission + - Stephen Hawking says universe created from nothing

mr_3ntropy writes: "Speaking to a sold out crowd at the Berkeley Physics Oppenheimer Lecture, Hawking said yesterday that he now believes the universe spontaneously popped into existence from nothing. He said more work is needed to prove this but we have time because "Eternity is a very long time, especially towards the end."
Webcast available here.(Realplayer or Real Alternative required)
This quote is at the very end of the lecture A transcript would have been helpful, but I couldn't find one available yet.
Very difficult to grasp and accept this idea, but interesting for those of us who constantly wonder about the origins of the universe."

Submission + - Certification of AV companies "worthless"

An anonymous reader writes: You may have noticed that packaging or advertisements for your anti-virus program carries a certificate from Checkmark. Computer Shopper has an interesting article explaining how AV companies achieve those certifications. Basically, they just pay Checkmark to provide them with a certificate. The author explains how samples are provided before testing, and the products retested until they pass. In his words "It is hard to imagine circumstances where an anti-virus product could fail this test."

Submission + - Pluto still a planet, at least in New Mexico, USA.

space_hippy writes: "The New Mexico State Legislature has decided that Pluto is a planet and "Pluto planet day" is March 13th. From the article on spaceref.com:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that, as Pluto passes overhead through New Mexico's excellent night skies, it be declared a planet and that March 13, 2007 be declared "Pluto Planet Day" at the legislature.
I would have hoped the New Mexico State Legislature had better things to do."
