Adafruit's Smart Helmet Helps Navigate to NYC's Citi Bike Stations 37

coop0030 writes "Add GPS, compass navigation & visibility with LEDs to a helmet that helps you find your way to the closest Citi Bike station in New York City. It's powered by Adafruit's FLORA, a wearable electronics platform. With a detailed tutorial, you can build the helmet, and customize it to work in most cities with a bike share as well."

Cat-like Robot Runs Like the Wind 69

DeviceGuru writes "Researchers at the Biorob lab at Switzerland's École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), have announced a cat-like robot that is claimed to be the fastest quadruped robot under 30 kilograms. The Cheetah-cub Robot, which runs real-time Xenomai Linux on an x86-based RoBoard robot control board, mimics the biomechanics of a cat to increase the speed and stability of it quadroped legs, helping it achieve speeds of 1.42m/s. The goal of the still-early-stage project is to encourage research in biomechanics, with an aim toward building faster robots for search and rescue, or ground exploration. More info is available on EPFL's Cheetah page."

NVIDIA To License Its GPU Tech 111

An anonymous reader writes "Today in a blog post, NVIDIA's General Counsel, David Shannon, announced that the company will begin licensing its GPU cores and patent portfolio to device makers. '[I]t's not practical to build silicon or systems to address every part of the expanding market. Adopting a new business approach will allow us to address the universe of devices.' He cites the 'explosion of Android devices' as one of the prime reasons for this decision. 'This opportunity simply didn't exist several years ago because there was really just one computing device – the PC. But the swirling universe of new computing devices provides new opportunities to license our GPU core or visual computing portfolio.' Shannon points out that NVIDIA did something similar with the CPU core used in the PlayStation 3, which was licensed to Sony. But mobile seems to be the big opportunity now: 'We'll start by licensing the GPU core based on the NVIDIA Kepler architecture, the world's most advanced, most efficient GPU. Its DX11, OpenGL 4.3, and GPGPU capabilities, along with vastly superior performance and efficiency, create a new class of licensable GPU cores. Through our efforts designing Tegra into mobile devices, we've gained valuable experience designing for the smallest power envelopes. As a result, Kepler can operate in a half-watt power envelope, making it scalable from smartphones to supercomputers.'"

Except in this case, the government doesn't just come after you. They come after you and disappear you to a small beach community in Cuba called Guantanimo Bay, where you sit and rot without charges or even counsel for decades on end.

That's what happens when your government can't be bothered to follow its own laws.

See what he did there? He planted the seed in the viewers' minds that rights are granted by government, and that they don't exist by the nature of human being.

We cannot allow ourselves to fall victim to that brand of thinking (and we are already doing it).

Government does not grant rights. Rights exist by the nature of being, and Government's one and only job is to protect those rights.

In most common-law jurisdictions, you cannot "own" property outright. Where your deed is held fee-simple, you do not own the land at all. You merely own the right to improve upon it, generally by placing structures upon the surface of it, or to a depth reasonable, necessary, and blessed by your government overlords, as with a basement.

You don't own the land beneath the surface or any of the mineral content thereof.

You don't own the vegetation that grows in it, nor the right for your animals to eat it.

You don't own the water that falls on it, runs into it, or out of it.

You own nothing except a conceptual privilege to build your house on it, subject to the rules, regulations, and conditions set forth by your lords and their "zoning" rules.

Kickass Torrents' KAT.ph Domain Seized By Philippine Authorities 122

hypnosec writes "Kickass Torrents hasn't been accessible since sometime yesterday, and now it has been confirmed that the domain name of the torrent website has been seized by Philippine authorities. Local record labels and the Philippine Association of the Recording Industry said that the torrent site was doing 'irreparable damages' to the music industry and following a formal complaint the authorities resorted to seizure of the main domain name. The site hasn't given up, and is operating as usual under a new domain name. The government of the Philippines has confirmed that the domain name has been seized based on formal complaints and copyright grounds."
