3-D Model of Breast Cancer in the Lab 71

Roland Piquepaille writes "According to BBC News, U.K. researchers have built a 3-D version of breast cancer in a test tube. Their model contains cells from normal and cancerous breast tissue. The researchers used a collagen gel to form 3-D structures to create structures similar to the ones found in a woman's breast. So far, they focused on a common pre-cancerous condition known as 'ductal carcinoma in situ' (DCIS). With this model, they hope to reduce experiments done on animals such as mice. In fact, these experiments are not always useful because similarities can be poor between mice and humans. Now it remains to be seen if this model will be endorsed by the scientific community."

Submission + - Theoretical Physics to be Turned on its Ear?

Bad Labrador writes: "Slashdot readers may remember an article and a powerpoint presentation delivered by Alexander Franklin Mayer last year entitled "The Many Directions of Time". In it, he postulates a slight modification to General Relativity, actually correcting an error Einstein apparently made. According to Mayer, correcting this error accounts for a large number of "anomalies" in observations, including a small but persistent error in GPS locations, the apparent acceleration and deacceleration of the Voyager spacecraft and so on. The blockbusting part is when the change is applied to cosmology — according to Mayer, the expanding universe, the Hubble constant and the "big Bang" theory are no more. They are artefacts of his discovery — gravitational transverse red shift. The Universe is not expanding. The book is freely available for download at http://afmayer.net/index.html Happy Slashdotting."

AMD's Plan To Recover From Its Perfect Storm 247

An anonymous reader writes "TG Daily has an interesting write-up on AMD's big Q1 loss and how the company plans to get back into the black. AMD admitted that Q1 was a meltdown and not just a miss. Looks like cost cutting, including layoffs, may be on the way. But the company says it won't change its overal direction. The CEO Hector Ruiz is quoted as saying, 'We are not going to change our strategy because of one lousy quarter.'"

Submission + - KODAK EASYSHARE 5300 All-In-One. Changing The Rule

mrneutron2004 writes: Kodak's recent launch of their Easyshare series of printers is slated to change this paradigm significantly. All of the Easyshare series of printers, the 5100, 5300, and 5500 (the top model, the 5500 will be released in June) use the same black and color-photo ink cartridges. Through Kodak's development of a new type of MEMS print head which is separate from the cartridges (unlike most of it's competitors), they have been able to aggressively price their cartridges at $9.99 and $14.99 respectively. To say this is significantly cheaper than the competition is an understatement. Not only that, they are offering aggressive bundling deals on photo cartridges with photo paper. Does a color cartridge and 135 sheets of their premium 4x6 color photo paper for $19.99 sound good? How about 180 sheets of their standard 4x6 color photo paper along with a color cartridge for $17.99? Sure sounds good to us. Doing the math this works out to an overall cost of 10-15 cents a print! http://www.fastsilicon.com/printer-reviews/kodak-e asyshare-5300-all-in-one.-changing-the-rules.html? Itemid=27

Submission + - Is Windows Vista in trouble?

Ken Erfourth writes: I'm a small computer shop owner, and I have noticed how little interest my customers have in Windows Vista. Now, the Inquirer.net is running a story about what they consider two powerful indications that Vista is failing in the marketplace.

One, Dell has reintroduced PCs running Windows XP on its website due to customer demand. Two, Microsoft is conducting a worldwide firesale on a bundle of Microsoft Office 2007/WindowsXP Starter Edition. According to Inquirer.net, at least, these are signs of serious problems selling Vista.

Are we seeing the stumbling of the Microsoft Juggernaught with the slow adoption of Windows Vista?

Submission + - The Best and Worst Intenet Laws

Anonymous Coward writes: "When a U.S. legislator describes the Internet as a "series of tubes" you just know that you're going to end up with some wacky laws on the books. Law professor Eric Goldman takes a look at the best and worst Internet laws in the U.S. Eric offers an analysis of the biggies such as the DMCA, but also shines a light on lesser known laws like the Dot Kids Implementation and Efficiency Act of 2002."

Submission + - Bjork sponsors a music video contest

STFS writes: A number of news sites have picked up on singer Björk's idea of having an open contest for making a music video to one of her latest songs titled Innocence.

The official contest page has more information about the contest along with some material (the song itself, the lyrics and some visual goodies) to get the ball rolling.

This may be the ultimate opportunity for those artistically inclined Slashdot readers to take a stab at world fame.

Black Hole Cluster Spawns Massive Cloud 74

Shifty Jim writes in with an article at space.com reporting that a cluster of galaxies harboring black holes may be the source of a massive cloud millions of light years across. Quoting: "A giant cloud of superheated gas 6 million light years wide might be formed by the collective sigh of several supermassive black holes, scientists say. The plasma cloud... might be the source of mysterious cosmic rays that permeate our universe... The plasma cloud is located about 300 million light years away near the Coma Cluster and is spread across a vast region of space thought to contain several galaxies with supermassive black holes... embedded at their centers."

The Germs' Drummer Arrested For Carrying Soap 384

dwrugh writes "The drummer for the seminal punk band The Germs, Don Bolles, was arrested in Orange County because a field-test kit indicated his bottle of Dr. Bronner's soap contained GHB, the date-rape drug. (Here is an interview with Bolles.) Using the same test kit, available on the web for $20 for a pack of 10, according to Bolles' attorney on NBC this morning, other soaps tested positive for GHB. But of course since it's just soap, when you test it in a real crime lab it comes back negative. Makes you wonder what other common household products also test positive, and how many others have been arrested based on faulty test kits who didn't have the resources to defend themselves."

Seems that EULA's aren't the only places companies try to screw you. A big source of consumer losses are sites that autorenew subscriptions. They get you signed up and then a month or a year later, after you've forgotten about them, the charge shows up on your credit card or PayPal account. This isn't just porn sites, but sites that seem otherwise legitimate.
