It is not challenged that the brain needs some time to recover from a stoned weekend. And by time I do not mean a day.

I'll challenge it. I can drink three beers on Saturday night, and still feel like crap at noon on Sunday. I can spend the entire weekend stoned, stop smoking about 10:00 Sunday night, and function perfectly well Monday without any noticeable effect except to be a little more relaxed than most Mondays.

You do realise you directly contradict yourself in the bolded sentence, don't you?

When I was a heavy user, I used to rationalise in a similar vein.

How such research is conducted.

Researcher: Have you used marijuana?

Dumb pot user: Yes

Smart pot user: No

Right.

The only real way to confirm this is to check for a history of drug related charges, which will only be present for the dumbest of the dumb.

Wrong.

(Try actually testing them for the presence of cannabinoids in their systems, maybe?)

And I challenge your statement that

A person's BAC or THC level is irrelevant, what's important is their ability to control a vehicle.

Back in the late 70s, Car & Driver magazine did an informal study (with a couple of professional test drivers) which was later reprinted in High Times, IIRC.

Their results appeared to indicate that small amounts of cannabis actually improved the pros' driving performance slightly and for a very short while, after which performance fell rapidly to much less than normal. They found in addition that using more than a small amount also quickly caused the pros' driving performance to decrease to much less than normal.

I too answered "80-100%" without thinking about my phones/tablet.

Both PCs are mostly FOSS, with the exceptions of Skype, Flash, and (on the work laptop) oXygenXML.

Phones and tablet all run Android with (I suspect) mostly closed-source apps. I guess I should look more seriously into Cyanogenmod and F-Droid.

A Closer Look At the Syrian Electronic Army 47

tsu doh nimh writes "Yesterday saw the publication of two stories focusing on two different Syrian men thought to be core members of the Syrian Electronic Army, the hacking group that took credit for recent break-ins that compromised the Web sites of The New York Times, The Washington Post and other media outlets. Working with a source who says he hacked into the SEA's servers this year, Vice.com profiles a fairly high-profile SEA member who uses the nickname "ThePro" and outs him as a young man named Hatem Deeb. Separately, Brian Krebs managed to get hold of the SQL database for the SEA's Web site after it was allegedly hacked this year, and follows a trail of clues back to one of two administrators of the SEA, which leads to another Syrian guy — a Web developer named Mohammed Osman, a.k.a. Mohamed Abd AlKarem."

Just so you know: I'm a native of the Deep South. I'm primarily of Anglo-Irish descent, and all my ancestors were in North America prior to the American Revolution. (FWIW, I'm eligible for membership in the SAR, SAC, and the Mayflower Society.) Both my parents have Master's degrees (my mother's degrees are in English Lit and Library Science). Our family moved North (to the Midwest, actually) while I was in elementary school. After high school and a couple of years of college (still in the Midwest), I spent about 15 years in Appalachia, then a couple of years in CA/AZ. After that, I lived in Australia for several years before coming to Sweden nearly 7 years ago. I've been mostly a writer and editor by trade for the last 15 years, and before that I worked in broadcasting as an announcer and copywriter for nearly a decade. In all the standardised tests I've ever taken, I've ranked consistently in the 97th or better percentile in all categories relating to English.

So I'd say that my credentials as a knowledgeable speaker and writer of English are pretty good.

I also speak fair amount of German and Spanish, can get by in Swedish, and have recently started tackling Mandarin.

And just so you don't think I'm just trying to impress you or whatever, I'll add that it's a damned good thing for me I can speak and write English as well as I do, since it makes me quite valuable here; I'd be in a tough spot without that ability, since I'm not that great a coder, and my mastery of spoken Swedish leaves a lot to be desired even though I've lived here for quite some time.

The o in "work" is actually an example of the o+e ligature (which Slashcode filters out, dammit) or ö except that modern English orthography is allergic to special characters and diacritics. (Compare the pronunciation of the same vowel in horse or sport.)

Make of all that what you will.
