Comment Re:Poor Apple. (Score 1) 235

I find it interesting that Apple doesn't sue Google over its phones. Okay, there is the suing by proxy with Rockstar, but nothing directly over the Nexus 5. It's a better phone than the iPhone 5 on most counts and half the price. Seems like they prefer to sue foreign companies in their local court, rather than risk a fight with Google.

These sorts of comparisons are always flawed. Yeah, arguably the HP is worse I'm some ways, with the Mac you have to factor in getting gouged on accessories and peripherals, having limited upgrade options etc.

What it boils down to that if you want something built to your spec, something low cost, something flexible and upgradable you can buy or build a PC. Of what Apple is offering happens to suit you then it's a reasonable choice.

France's 'Culture Tax' Could Hit YouTube and Facebook 314

PolygamousRanchKid writes with this excerpt from BusinessWeek: "Should YouTube subsidize le cinéma français? France's audiovisual r.egulator thinks so. In a report this week, the Superior Audiovisual Council (CSA) says that video-sharing websites should be subject to a tax that helps finance the production of French films and TV shows. ... Although the CSA report says that videos posted online by private individuals should not be subject to taxation, it contends that video-sharing sites increasingly have become 'professional' content providers. ... Separately, France is considering a tax on smartphones, tablets, and other devices as another source of revenue for cultural subsidies. The proposed tax would raise an estimated €86 million annually that would be used to finance the 'cultural industries' digital transition,' France's Culture Ministry said at the time."

I agree, but even so a lot of misogyny, not-so-subtle racism and trolling gets modded up. That's fine on a site like Slashdot, but I can see why sites like YouTube and newspapers that are trying to be more mainstream and family friendly would want to stop it.

Moderation by staff is the only way. The BBC does it and their comments sections, while displaying alarming stupidity typical of the British public, are largely free from abuse.

They wrote custom Modem drivers for every modem they could get their hands on, and for years where the #1 choice for a lot of people because when the Windows Modem driver broke they could still connect to AOL.

Really, anything made after 1977 is lame modern crap.

Fancy new games like NES Open Tournament are just pale imitations of games like Apawamis Golf on the PDP-10. If you thought Moral Combat was controversial, you haven't played Dr. Sluggo's Torture Chamber!

Did anyone ever make a sci-fi survival horror game that could compete with Jeff Shaevel's Chase?
