It's not going to be safe to sit in a movie theater until there is an effective vaccine, and most of the population has received it.
October surprise? 2024? 2030? Who knows? Maybe no permanent vaccine is even possible.

By the time this is "over," a lot of people -- myself included -- ain't coming out of quarantine. No cruises, concerts, sporting events... nothing in a crowd, or indoors in large numbers.

I went in there for a MS support issue... I was the only customer in the huge store, and they asked if I had an appointment!
I replied, "If I wanted to need an appointment, I would have bought a Mac. There are two hundred people shopping over at the Apple store, so this is quicker."

We each needed a mercantile license in the cities where we were allowed to pick up, so the police did a background check on us before we were allowed to drive a taxi. The people getting INTO the taxi, however, could be pretty much anybody: they all paid cash (or didn't), and even when you picked up at a known address you were taking your chances. We used to joke about getting "lead poisoning" from some random passenger.

Now, the passengers are all identified by Uber with at least a name and credit card number, but the drivers are anyone who can fill out the online application.

We're using "gigabit" Fios now, which is actually close to 900 Mbps in both directions, and it rocks. Even mundane tasks like sending or downloading a large file (we're buying a house) are SO much easier.

When we started the house search, I told my wife "no fiber, no sale." She agreed instantly, since she and her mother can do anything they want online without me complaining that they're interrupting my work...

Great, so what if they had a flip phone, or no data connection was available? Or maybe the phone decides to throw up a smarmy "you can't install this app on this device" for whatever reason?

I don't get this opposition. You'd do something else, wouldn't you? Why would you consider always going to the lowest common denominator just because someone might have a flip phone?

It is truly dangerous to rely on an "app". This should only be used as an option for when all else fails, not something to solely rely on.

If the options are "rely on an app", "don't rely on an app", and you can't do the first because your phone can't do that for whatever reason, you fall back to the second. But if you can do the first in a particular case and it works better for that case, why wouldn't you? It's wrong to use the better solution as a last resort, it's better to use the best solution that is available to the situation.
