Comment $15K? Errr? (Score 2) 83

Don't get me wrong: they were NEVER cheap. But I don't even think the most expensive base model (the X2) was more than $8K. And I believe the general-purpose one, the i2, went for around $6.5K, plus accessories. Honestly, they were over-engineered: they were under pressure to release, like, yesterday, and so never did enough iterations. Too much steel, dual batteries was probably overkill (and blew the price up $800), double- and triple-redundancy, etc.

Comment BBB -- it's a thing. (Score 1) 59

I've used Big Blue Button starting a decade ago, and it's good! Largely centered around a classroom, or at least presenter paradigm, it had solid clients and worked well. Alas, the clients were Flash/Java based. I know a transition to HTML5 clients was underway, but around that time I changed companies to one that had a commercial application. I am still on the BBB mailing list, and it's still actively developed and supported. I should probably check it out again.

Comment Lost me at 'esr'. (Score 3, Insightful) 98

Over the years, I have come to decide that esr has gone from a bet win (open-sourcing of Netscape, Cathedral and the Bazaar) to a net-negative: rambling screeds about being rich, about being poor (and how his fall was the government's fault), homosexuality, guns, etc., etc. I find I no longer much care what the self-important blowhard has to say about much of anything.

But as a former Segway employee, I do agree. I am familiar with far too many brain trauma cases due to lack of helmets. I totally think electric anything should be allowed, but for all that's holy, get helmets on users. Heck: my childhood buddy would likely still be alive had he been wearing one on his bike. And I have stories from Segway that have done nothing to make me consider changing my mind.

Comment Niche (Score 2) 48

Agreed that OpenVPN is niche, but disagree as to why: it's had perfectly acceptable Windows support for ~20 years. Just not sure where it lost its momentum, or why, as it was so superior to other options -- commercial and free -- for quite some time.

Comment Not wild about it... (Score 2) 48

I mean it works, and well, but I wish there were better logging (unless maybe I'm missing something), and I really liked both the docs and HOWTOs that came with OpenVPN. Hopefully now that it's being merged, docs will pick up some. Sadly for the prior poster, there will be no speed bump -- loading a module compiled out-of-tree is identical in performance to having it in-tree.
