Comment Some regulations I'd like to see (Score 1) 153

  • Clean training sets that can be inspected and provenance proved
  • Watermarking for AI generated content
  • Clear statements of what is done with material provided to AI systems - are your prompts captured, logged, tied to your user account, or otherwise used for something?
  • A mechanism for data verification, acknowledgement when status is unknown
  • An audit trail so that results can be traced - why was a specific response generated?

I had a guy tell me recently that he LOVES ChatGPT for programming. "I'm not a programmer at all," he crowed, "and it helped me write a working plugin for Wordpress!"

I didn't have the heart to ask if ChatGPT had included data validation or any other security standards. He'll find out soon enough.

This happened to a big work meeting I attended... over two years ago. It's upsetting and easy to panic in the moment and just shut everything down. Zoom has made a lot of changes since then to give presenters more control and quickly wrangle attackers. BUT, you still have to know the controls are there and set them appropriately. A painful lesson - I'm glad I am not the IT person/lowly administrator responsible for that meeting.

Comment Extinction (Score 1) 226

As an actual English undergrad, I'm not surprised the degree is going extinct. I went to community college the first 2 years and didn't rack up a ton of debt. But, nobody wanted 'English major' as someone to hire then and it's probably worse now.

I'd hoped to go into writing, editing, or publishing, but those fields are either disappearing (journalism) or expected more experience than a BA provided. I got an advanced degree in a technical field so I could get a decent job. I use my writing skills when I need to document something.

It generally felt like nobody respected an English degree. It was considered easy, fluffy, not rigorous. It's a little surprising to see a nostalgia piece.

How much of the 'inflation' crisis is caused by price-gouging corporations raking in record profits during a global pandemic? Why do they act like it's some mysterious force like the weather? It is grocery monoplies and oil corporations CHOOSING to increase prices and put the squeeze on consumers. If there were laws against price-gouging for food, housing and energy, we wouldn't have an inflation crisis.

Comment Plastics companies don't want recycling to work (Score 1) 207

They do not want it to work. They may a lot more profit from 'virgin' plastic (ie, not recycled) and they purposely make it difficult-to-impossible to recycle their materials.

They'd rather have every creature on the land die starvation, thirst and heat and every creature in the sea die with a gut full of microplastics than standardize on a type of plastic that would actually be easily recyclable.

USA has been prosecuting women for having miscarriages since long before Roe fell. There's a whole database here: https://www.nationaladvocatesforpregnantwomen.org/arrests-and-prosecutions-of-pregnant-women-1973-2020/

It's only going to get worse from here. If you care about the women in your life, please practice safe sex, educate your children and make sure they have access to birth control.

Submission + - "Letter in Support of Responsible Fintech Policy" (concerned.tech)

skinfaxi writes: 26 concerned experts and technologists such as David Troy and Bruce Schneier have written a "Letter in Support of Responsible Fintech Policy" warning Congress about blockchain technology.

By its very design, blockchain technology, specifically so-called "public blockchains", are poorly suited for just about every purpose currently touted as a present or potential source of public benefit.

Concerned experts may sign on to the letter if they wish.
