Perhaps you don't live in the US, but there hasn't been any attempt to remove guns from anyone. You didn't happen to post this from Russia, did you?

Submission + - Dell releases Ubuntu Linux-based XPS 13 Developer Edition (9370) laptop l (betanews.com) 1

BrianFagioli writes: Despite being a major Microsoft partner with Windows, Dell also sells desktops and laptops pre-loaded with Ubuntu. One of the company's most impressive computers is the svelte XPS 13 laptop. Dell sells a version with Ubuntu that it dubs "Developer Edition," but non-developers can, of course, use it too. Today, the company announces the the 7th-generation version of this notebook. The 9370, as it is called, can be purchased immediately.

Barton George, Dell shares, "The new XPS 13 developer edition (9370) features the 8th Generation Intel Quad Core, a brand new chassis, an improved display and smaller borders. The 9370 is even thinner, lighter and smaller than its already svelte predecessor, the 9360. Note, the 9370 does not replace the 9360, as the two will coexist."

I know it's fun to hate on $INDUSTRY, but lets get down to the technology here, the science, and what is possible today that wasn't possible five years ago. We can argue about the costs later, it fundamentally doesn't matter. No single person will pay $850K for this treatment, it'll be insurance, charity, etc. What has been developed is a virus that introduces DNA into specific regions of the body. It's really mind-blowing! Think of the possibilities this opens into other treatments. We may be able to adapt the science heal lungs in those born with cystic fibrosis, repair hearts of children born with cardiomyopathy, cure Type I/II diabetes, etc. Besides, if Toyota had to build only as many cars, as patients received this treatment, those would cost a million bucks too! The price seems reasonable for the amount of work that was surely required.

Submission + - SPAM: Cord-cutting spikes fivefold in cable TV's worst quarter ever

schwit1 writes: Cable's day of reckoning has come. With all the major cable and satellite companies having reported their quarterly numbers, analyst firm MoffettNathanson put together a new cord-cutting report, and things are bad. Pay-TV providers lost an estimated 762,000 pay-TV subscribers over the first three months of this year—five times more than they lost during the same period last year. To make matters worse, Q1 has historically been a strong season for pay TV.

You're also ignoring that we could do similar actions for fuel tanks. Proposition 1 : when a battery has exhausted its capacity, replace it with another that is fully charged. Proposition 2 : when a fuel tank is empty, slide in another that has already been filled. Yes, I know you can't simply pop in another fuel tank to existing planes, but with a redesign like you're talking about, they modifications could be made just the same.

Submission + - Electric car ferries enter service in Norway (bbc.co.uk)

AmiMoJo writes: Following two years of trials of the world's first electric car ferry, named Ampere, Norwegian ferry operators are busy making the transition from diesel. It is thought that 84 ferries are ripe for conversion to electric power, and 43 ferries on longer routes would benefit from conversion to hybrids that use diesel engines to charge their batteries. If this were done, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions would be cut by 8,000 tonnes per year and CO2 emissions by 300,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to the annual emissions from 150,000 cars. The Ampere uses an 800kWh battery, equivalent to 8 high end Tesla cars.

Submission + - House approves bill to force public release of EPA science (ap.org)

schwit1 writes: House Republicans are taking aim at the Environmental Protection Agency, targeting the way officials use science to develop new regulations.

A bill approved Wednesday by the GOP-controlled House would require that data used to support new regulations to protect human health and the environment be released to the public.

Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, said "the days of 'trust me' science are over," adding that the House bill would restore confidence in the EPA's decision-making process.

Connecticut Rep. Elizabeth Esty and other Democrats said the bill would cripple EPA's ability to conduct scientific research based on confidential medical information and risks privacy violations by exposing sensitive patient data.

The bill was approved 228-194 and now goes to the Senate.
