CNN critic who posted on Reddit may have been threated with revealing identity

  • They should have done it:

CNN and other outlets had previously reported that this user, who uses a pseudonym, had also posted anti-Semitic and racist content on Reddit, including an image identifying all of the Jewish employees of CNN, designated with a Jewish star next to their photos./quote

And therefor it is Ok to blackmail him?
      • Wait, what is he being blackmailed with? Being an asshole? Call the whaaambulance already.

With doxing [wikipedia.org]. It is not Ok [geekwire.com] and various people from Julian Assange [twitter.com] to Vox [vox.com] have rightly condemned it:

The two paragraphs, as multiple journalists (including myself) pointed out, read a lot like CNN essentially threatening to dox someone — meaning reveal a person’s private identity — if that person didn’t behave as CNN demanded. The apparent threat quickly took off on social media under the hashtag #CNNBlackmail, with mostly conservatives and Trump

          • No, I don't have selective ethics. 'Play stupid games, win stupid prizes' has been a constant throughout history, and I don't see why him being a conservative gives him special dispensation. It's like the old anti-rape slogan: If he wanted to remain anonymous, why was he taking multiple potshots at a multinational corporation, doing a shit job of hiding his identity and thinking he was doing anything valuable? Sounds like he was asking for it.

So its fine for him to dox other people, but if CNN says they'll do likewise if he continues its bad?

        Yes.

It's the leftist way: first call someone a racist, then hit him.

Because, it's OK to hit a racist.

        • Because, it's OK to hit a racist.

The fact that you think this is a controversial opinion says a lot more about you than anything else.

            You're probably right.

I've always thought we had freedom of speech, and that you can't just assault someone for saying things.

Or more clearly, that speaking your mind is not illegal, but assaulting someone *is* illegal.

This used to be the norm, and I firmly believe that "it's OK to hit a racist" is controversial (weakly stated), and completely wrong (more strongly and correctly stated).

I am astonished that anyone else in this country, let alone a blog full of smart, educated, and informed readers, would thi

            • As if protection under the law for free speech is a quaint notion that died out years ago

I fail to see how this right of his is being violated in any actual way.

The individual doxed other people and is clearly making CNN's jewish employees targets for attacks. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander.

They've stated they did not do so.
  • They really did [dailycaller.com] threaten him with "doxing".
  • Folks, some of the comments here are interesting, but others seem to miss some of the concerns outlined by Greenwald (the author of The Intercept articles).

Free speech (what little we have as politicians in the USA and UK attempt to strip it) comes with a certain level of responsibility which news media outlets needs to take more seriously. Certainly contacting someone who express an opinion on a public forum with the purpose of intimidation carries serious repercussions. especially when you threaten the
