Sony's New A1 II Pairs Updated Design With Largely Familiar Performance 12

Sony has announced the a1 II flagship mirrorless camera, retaining its predecessor's 50.1-megapixel stacked sensor while adding AI capabilities and improved stabilization. The camera features a new dedicated AI processor, enhancing autofocus performance with claimed improvements of 50% for bird eye detection and 30% for both animal and human subjects.

Its in-body stabilization system now offers 8.5 stops of correction. The a1 II maintains the original's 30 frames-per-second shooting speed and 759-point autofocus system. New features include pre-capture shooting with a one-second buffer and a multi-angle LCD screen borrowed from the a9 III. Connectivity upgrades include a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port, while dual card slots support both CFexpress Type A and UHS-II SD cards. The Sony a1 II will be available mid-December for $6,499.

Who among us in this forum would even seriously be interested in purchasing this $6,500.00 camera body? What are we supposed to learn from this 'news'?

As the price shows this camera is not for everybody.
But it sure is a nice tool and I'm contemplating trading in my Nikon D850.
A problem with such cameras is that most have a whole infrastructure around it, like several expensive lenses and that makes the exercice much more expensive than just buying the body.
So this camera is mainly for those professionals that need it to make money or serious amateurs.
      • Last news published on expensive cameras two months ago had several slashdot commenters show discuss and compare the merits of top range Leicas and Fujifilm cameras. https://mobile.slashdot.org/st... [slashdot.org] I guess it matches the generic definition of "Nerd" so is suitable for this website.

I am personally interested in electronics high of all kinds. I'm not buying these expensive cameras because I know I wouldn't have time to put them to serious use, and that would be sad to see it a wonderful piece of tech catch

I have the A7RV which I use for landscape with tripod and handheld shooting (recently doing a trip to Nepal), but I am also getting into bird photography, which I need more FPS for than what the A7RV can deliver - especially for the "bird in flight" shots. So this A71 Mark II is everything I hoped for in a do-it-all body, and I am excited for it, and am almost certainly buying it. I didn't know this was out yet, so learned a lot from this "news".

Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to answer my serious question with a serious and informative answer given your actual real world experience, which I appreciate very much to have learned from. It seems the slashdots are still useful.

I am among us in this forum and am seriously interested. I would like a second camera to complement my a7Rv (I have all the lenses I want and need). I am carefully reading and watching reviews while I consider if it will be worth it (to me). I am leaning towards buying it.

... but what I really want is an a9R with a 50mp global sensor.

The interesting bit here is the sensor. My phone has a smaller but similar Sony sensor that does multiple exposure stacking, and it's incredible for use at night. Even during the day the dynamic range is exceptional, but at night it really shines with low noise even when taking 4k video.

Some dashcams are starting to get it too, but I haven't seen any really good tests on how well they work yet. They look better but are they better for e.g. capturing number plates?

  • Who were the marketing geniuses who came up with 'A1 II' ?

  • These fancy features only mean anything when you invest in $10,000 lenses. With consumer grade lenses, not as great as it sounds.

How many surrealists does it take to screw in a lightbulb? One to hold the giraffe and one to fill the bathtub with brightly colored power tools.
