OpenAI's Sora Text-to-Video Generator Will Be Publicly Available Later This Year (theverge.com) 13

You'll soon get to try out OpenAI's buzzy text-to-video generator for yourself. From a report: In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati says Sora will be available "this year" and that it "could be a few months." OpenAI first showed off Sora, which is capable of generating hyperrealistic scenes based on a text prompt, in February. The company only made the tool available for visual artists, designers, and filmmakers to start, but that didn't stop some Sora-generated videos from making their way onto platforms like X.

In addition to making the tool available to the public, Murati says OpenAI has plans to "eventually" incorporate audio, which has the potential to make the scenes even more realistic. The company also wants to allow users to edit the content in the videos Sora produces, as AI tools don't always create accurate images. "We're trying to figure out how to use this technology as a tool that people can edit and create with," Murati tells the Journal. When pressed on what data OpenAI used to train Sora, Murati didn't get too specific and seemed to dodge the question.

100 year old Disney characters no one gives a shit about go on a all male epic adventure with a over styled 12 year old boy dressed as a 14 year old girl to stop the giant tentacle monster from outer space.

or was the plot to 3 I cant be assed to even look it up

    • I wouldn't be surprised if the trailer for this is completely AI gen'd whenever it comes out. It's a Disney title.

Yesterday, ChatGPT refuses even a poem about farts for my kids. As long as generative AI is restricted to an annoying level of political correctness and prudishness, any form of porn will be excluded. I give OpenAI 0% chance of survival on the long term. Their death sentence will be the moment that some other company comes along and does AI porn right.

      First things first.

The more pressing need is for videos showing (opposing political team's candidate) in a compromising situation.

Gotta ratchet up the distrust and divisiveness, amirite?

    • It's not like such AI models don't exist already. Tweaked models for Stable Diffusion are commonly used for such purposes already. Check out civit.ai if you're thirsty for that sort of thing. And those models are small enough to run locally on your computer so there's nothing anyone can do to restrict it retroactively.

That's what I find so hilarious about, for example, the tempest in a teacup about Gemini putting people of colour in the wrong circumstances. The shocking thing is not that it happens, but tha

  • I first read it as "OpenAI's Sorta Text-to-Video Generator Will Be Publicly Available Later This Year." For a brief moment I thought some marketroid got ahold of some truth serum when writing copy. I had to re-read it several times before I realize that "summpin' ain't raight" feeling was for a reason.

  • Get ready to be flooded with regurgitated hamburger content; it will soon be deemed commercially economically unpalatable to create anything that's actually new.

Wonder why Hollywood is so hooked on basing everything on existing IP? Sequels, prequels, etc? Sora will be the AI that they replace the meat objects with, much as Uber/Lyft/UPS/DoorDash/etc. want to replace the meat objects behind the wheel.
