John Fetterman's Debate Was Much Worse Than Expected, and Three Moments Perfectly Illustrate That

The debate between John Fetterman and Mehmet Oz is in the book, and Iâ(TM)m going to make the most non-hyperbolic statement ever made on this site. That debate was the worst, most disturbing thing Iâ(TM)ve ever seen in politics.

It was that bad, and if you didnâ(TM)t watch it, you canâ(TM)t possibly understand just how bad it was. I mean that sincerely. If you are only reading quotes or watching clips, you will never grasp the full scale of the disaster that unfolded.

We don't have to respect or admire anyone in public office. Indeed, H8ing The Man is nearly an American requirement. But a political party that foists unfit candidates like Fetterman or Zombie Joe on voters merits being put down like a metaphorical rabid dog.

  • What a shame.. Looks like they're throwing the election, or that the clips are heavily edited

  • I'm not going to read your conspiracy site. If you're calling him out as a "zombie" or somehow less-than-stellar in his delivery though I'll remind you that Fetterman is recovering from a stroke he suffered earlier this year. He is recovering, but not fully back to his previous self yet. If you want to claim that he should have stepped aside and allowed the democrats to nominate someone else, I'll let you make that argument though I'll point out it's really a challenge to shift a campaign that dramatical
    • I've been told many times my medical condition when it interferes with my job- is reason to be fired. The ADA is not as powerful as it pretends to be.

When your disability makes you literally incompetent at your job, well, that's a job you can't support doing, at least not sustainably. He should have stepped aside when the stroke happened- even though it was a shift in May for a November election.

I have to wonder though, what takes the time to prepare for a November election? Why is is the campaign season

      • When your disability makes you literally incompetent at your job,

What evidence do you have to suggest that he would be "incompetent" at the job of being a US Senator? This is not an improv troupe here that he's auditioning for. The Senate is supposed to be the more deliberative lawmaking body of the federal government, it has never been rewarded for - or encouraged to pursue - speed. He's clearly not an idiot (though clearly being an idiot is not enough to disqualify someone from a federal position) and with the staff that goes with a Senator's office, any disability

        • any disability that he is working through is not a big deal.

Is the refusal to release medical records a "disability"?

          • any disability that he is working through is not a big deal.

Is the refusal to release medical records a "disability"?

No. I'm saying he is working through a temporary disability as a result of his stroke. Not all disabilities are permanent. Just as one could be considered temporarily disabled while healing a broken bone, he is temporarily disabled while recovering from his stroke.

Though on the matter of releasing medical records it's interesting that republicans are screaming for him to release his while nobody ever cared about the clearly inaccurate records that were released for Trump before and during his admini

            • I don't care about Trump or republicans. I don't know why you do. Are you voting for any of them? That was an issue when he was on the ballot and in office. Obviously the demand for his records was insufficient. Same is happening with this guy. The overall demand for transparency and accountability is woefully inadequate and leaves us with low quality politicians, because people choose to believe what that say and not what they do.

              • What is it that people hope to find on Fetterman's medical records? He's been transparent that he had a stroke earlier this year. He's clearly recovering from it; there is no good way to project right now how much more he will recover.

That is a substantial difference from Trump, who very demonstrably lied on his medical records and one way or another got physicians to sign off on his lies.

Is Trump a low quality politician? Without a doubt. I don't know enough about Fetterman's campaign or person

                  Interesting.. you have admissible evidence?

He claimed on his health forms that he is 6'3".

This is counter to his driver's license application from around 20 years ago when he claimed to only be 6'1". Anyone who grows 2 inches that late in life is dealing with a major medical condition.

More so, there is ample photographic evidence that he is at most 5'11". President Lawnchair is only 6'1", and in photos of them standing next to each other Trump was clearly 2 inches shorter. There is no reason why he would voluntarily slouch while standing ne

                    • You could have saved yourself a lot of effort and just said "no"

                    • What are you asking to admit the evidence to, and under what criteria? He absolutely, positively, without a doubt, lied on his health forms when he said he was 6'3". Take off his elevator shoes and measure him, he is absolutely not the height he wants people to think of him to be.

Now is this a grave criminal offense? No. It is very dishonest for sure. If it weren't for the fact that most of his life was a series of lies we might even be concerned about it but he moved the bar so far on lying that pre

                      How do you know this?

Because the health forms released by his administration list his height at 6'3". Yet his driver's license in 2012 listed his height as 6'2" [politico.com] and an earlier one exists that listed him as 6'1". Official photos of him standing next to the 6'1" President Obama show that Obama is clearly a couple inches taller than Trump, which puts his actual height closer to 5'11", possibly even less depending on which pair of elevator shoes he wore in that picture.

                    • But, you have to believe his words

Not when physical reality discredits his words, I do not. His height is not a matter of opinion, it is a matter of fact. There is no room for interpretation here, there are no "alternative facts" for it. He is very simply not 6'3". We could ask what reason(s) he has for lying about his height but it doesn't change the fact that he is lying about his height.

                    • Not when physical reality discredits his words

Ah, I see, your rules don't apply to everybody

Seriously, there is vast world of difference between your "every politician from this country is interchangeable with every other politician from this country, 1000% of the time unless I bless them" conspiracy and the actual facts of Trump's lies on his health forms.

                    • Tell it to the judge, babe..

Your obsession with Trump really is quite the spectacle

        • The necessity of a Senator to actually get through a speech in front of his colleagues without going off the rails or screwing up sound familiar?

I mean, it's kind of central to the job to be able to improvise speech during debates on the floor of the Senate.

          • I mean, it's kind of central to the job to be able to improvise speech during debates on the floor of the Senate.

Improvise? Not in the past several decades, at least. They schedule their "floor debates" far ahead of time and deliver prepared speeches. Whether they read something their staff prepared or something that was written by a children's author decades ago, they almost never say anything that they haven't already vetted and edited. They take credit for debate but they almost never actually debate anything in any real sense.

    • Are you supporting a political party pushing candidates that are unfit?

It doesn't matter. PA voters get to decide if your garbage argument is worthy.
      • Are you supporting a political party pushing candidates that are unfit?

Fetterman is at least as fit to be a Senator and Trump was to be POTUS and you very enthusiastically supported Trump as POTUS yet you tell us that Fetterman should not even get a chance to run.

        • Fetterman is at least as fit to be a Senator [as] Trump was to be POTUS

I can't gauge your sincerity here, but I just don't see how any informed observer could possibly support your position.

Trump went from being a professional internet troll to being POTUS (though of course he continued to be the former while also having the latter as his formal title). His best qualification was that he was alive. When he left that remained his best qualification, considering the disastrous outcomes of his administration and how little he learned while holding that title.

There is nothing about Fetterman that is disqualifying for holding the title of senator that was not also present in Trump that shoul

            • Trump went from being a professional internet troll to being POTUS

Wow, you pirouetted from demanding PhD-level rigor for statements to "rectal pluck" with the maneuverability of a UFO. [golf clap]

              • Genius is pain...

Fill a room with PhDs and watch the steel cage match

                • Over what? The biggest takeaway for me, academically, professionally, or spiritually, is the need to be humble.
                  • "the need to be humble."

Hmm, another conflict with your political beliefs. Yes, the need is great, but would be a great rarity in that room.. goes with the territory

                    • "Political beliefs" is substantially an oxymoron to me.

"Beliefs" are internal, individual matters of the soul. Politics are external, group matters occuring in body/mind plane.

"Society" is the instantaneous aggregate snapshot of that group executing within the confines of its laws and leadership.

This is why a politician opening piehole and saying "The American people. . ." is so sublimely funny to me. How can any of these idiots read a mind, much less 300+ million minds in parallel? What conceit.
                    • Politics are external, group matters occuring in body/mind plane.

It is an expression of beliefs, as phony as they might be, it's just business, gotta close the deal

How can any of these idiots read a mind, much less 300+ million minds in parallel? What conceit.

That's Hollywood, babe... They are actors and frauds. It is truly naive to take any of them seriously for their word. Your republicans are no better or worse than his democrats. They are one, in perfect symbiosis. You needn't keep up the charade with me.

                    • Your republicans are no better or worse than his democrats. They are one, in perfect symbiosis.

I have absolutely never made the claim that the GOP was any better; only marginally more likely to offer improvements.

For example, respecting unborn life, the border, the 2A.

Kinda peevish to omit credit where due.

I do substantially agree with you, though. Substantial reform of Leviathan is unlikely.
