Journal Marxist Hacker 42's Journal: Recommendations: Intercom applications 9
Due to extended WFH (until June 2021) and online schooling (Until November 14 which will likely get extended to punish Republicans after the election) I find myself in the situation of a special needs child needing help from time to time in a different room.
Does anybody know of a good Intercom-over-WIFI-on-the-LAN solution? I really don't want this sending traffic through my overworked firewall, so many of the game intercom systems are not really what I'm looking for.

Yes, broadcast your house to Amazon.
What's wrong with a regular old intercom from Radio Shack?

Radio Shack no longer exists, so I am trying to figure this out with existing hardware I have.

Do any one of these [windowsreport.com] work?

Those look like exactly what I need, thank you

My first thought was to use Skype or WhatsApp, but then I realized you want to keep it local, so I googled LAN messaging and hit gold

And got a list that was actually messaging, rather than chat. that's where I was failing in my google-fu

You didn't state what your application is. Monitoring activity? Conversing? Etc.?
Some work very well for monitoring and some are distortion free to the level of conversation.
These are easily available and do not use your LAN's bandwidth.

Ah, use case. Special needs kid needs help with homework, I'm working, my wife is working, in three separate rooms. Need a voice side channel.
Which is why I was looking more for a software solution.
