Journal Shadow Wrought's Journal: I miss teh OMG PONIES!!! 19

*sigh*

Part of why I like the dot is April the First. In jokes, dupes, ponies, and nonsense. It was a familiar reminder in this corporatized world that some people were still capable of not taking themselves too serious. Alas, not anymore.

Maybe the next slashdot poll should be, "Which editor do you blame for killing T3h P0n13s?"

I miss teh OMG PONIES!!!

  • It seems the joke is that they're playing it straight this year. Somewhat disappointing, really.

I'm of two minds about it. It is just one day a year for everyone to let loose and go crazy, but when you get right down to it the format of slashdot means that we're basically getting other people's jokes copied and pasted to this site, and I'm sure trying to get everything crammed through the approval queue in one day is more than the editors really wanted to deal with.

I think the OMG*Ponies theme was the highlight of Slashdot's April 1st career precisely because it came from slashdot, not just some joke
      • I'm not big into jokes and tricks and what not, but I agree with you on the OMG Ponies! and such jokes that are at least something the slashdot guys did themselves.

I miss those ponies, damnit. Bring back the ponies! Husband and I were really looking forward to what they would come up with this year. I've been visiting the homepage waiting for it to change into something, but no dice. Oh well.

PS: someone needs to make a greasemonkey thing for the OMG Ponies theme. I would totally download it.

          the OMG Ponies theme
It's not greasemonkey, but you can use the slashdotter [mozilla.org] extension.

I just switched it on for a second. My eyes hurt.
          • After posting my dupe reply, I went and installed it. Slashdot looks nice all in Apple black.

I went with the ponies theme for the politics section. Might help me be a little calmer.

Maybe a greasemonkey script would be the way to go after all... detect certain words in the summary (evolution, global warming, Muslim, Democrat, Republican, etc.), and apply the ponies theme as needed. :)
        • Apparently, the FF "slashdotter" extension has this capability. Haven't used it myself, so YMMV

        May I AOL?

I had a blast that year! Loved it... Last year was too much, and this year is, well.... too serious. I'm not complaining, the floodgates of last year were too much.

I think OMG*Ponies should have become a tradition. At least the theme.... Must be just me.

I was hoping they'd drop a new CSS in today that did another revamp. I really liked the OMG Ponies joke, and was hoping they could top it this year. I don't know how, but if they could, it would really have to be something.

I don't use Facebook, but an imitation close enough might have worked. That, or make over the site so people think they accidentally went to Fark instead. Digg would be pretty easy, but I don't think Taco and friends would think it funny.

  • i guess i don't really care too much for april first. in general it is ok, but i boycot /. on this day. (I got your post through rss, I don't plan on visiting the front page till tomorrow.)
  • The OMG Ponies slashdot homepage was great. I'm really quite disappointed that there seems to be no noticeable attempt to commemorate the day. I don't even see any stories about pranks elsewhere.

  • It was a familiar reminder in this corporatized world that some people were still capable of not taking themselves too serious. Alas, not anymore.

Back in ye olden days of /., I remember CmdrTaco blogging on the front page about losing his underwear on one of his flights. This was a long time ago, so I could be wrong on the specifics, but it was something like that. That is the very definition of not taking slashdot seriously. :)
  • I have all the images & css stored somewhere around here, I should really resurrect it one day...
  • i 3 teh ponies
