Al Qaeda Communications Hacked by Government?->

Submitted by Endoflow2010
Endoflow2010 writes "(AP) WASHINGTON — A popular jihadist Internet forum has been knocked off the Internet, and counterterrorism experts say it appears it was hacked.

Cybersecurity analysts say the al-Shamukh forum appears to have been taken down by a fairly sophisticated cyberattack that hit not only the website, but the server — which is the main computer that enables people to access the site over the Internet.

Evan Kohlmann, a counterterrorism expert who tracks jihadist websites as a senior partner with Flashpoint Partners consultancy in New York, described the site as a key al Qaeda propaganda forum.

He said it bounces around between Internet hosts every few months, but has seemingly been allowed to exist as an open secret, possibly allowing a Western government to use it as an intelligence resource.

"These sites can be like spy satellites, they're great ways of gathering information about your adversaries," he said in an interview late Wednesday. "Bringing them down is like shooting at your own spy satellites. But there are others who don't agree with that.""

There are games i like (MMORPGs, strategy / empire building, puzzle, though I haven't played much except WoW for a few years), and games that I don't like (FPSs - the movement makes me feel ill).

I don't think that any imbalance between the numbers of male and female gamers is anything to do with the games themselves, but rather the mindset and cultural expectations of their potential players.

Yes, it works.

I can't tell my kids from the others in their class without help if they aren't dressed as they were the last time I saw them, but still have a cutoff point in the videos where the face is no longer real.

I have landmarks for the people I know that let me identify them - woe betide me if somebody has a new haircut, or gets new glasses.

Average Budget For Major, Multi-Platform Games Is $18-28 Million 157

An anonymous reader passes along this excerpt from Develop: "The average development budget for a multiplatform next-gen game is $18-$28 million, according to new data. A study by entertainment analyst group M2 Research also puts development costs for single-platform projects at an average of $10 million. The figures themselves may not be too surprising, with high-profile games often breaking the $40 million barrier. Polyphony's Gran Turismo 5 budget is said to be hovering around the $60 million mark, while Modern Warfare 2's budget was said to be as high as $50 million."

Modded Xbox Bans Prompt EFF Warning About Terms of Service 254

from the by-reading-this-you-bequeath-me-all-your-possessions dept.
Last month we discussed news that Microsoft had banned hundreds of thousands of Xbox users for using modified consoles. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has now pointed to this round of bans as a prime example of the power given to providers of online services through 'Terms of Service' and other usage agreements. "No matter how much we rely on them to get on with our everyday lives, access to online services — like email, social networking sites, and (wait for it) online gaming — can never be guaranteed. ... he who writes the TOS makes the rules, and when it comes to enforcing them, the service provider often behaves as though it is also the judge, jury and executioner. ... While the mass ban provides a useful illustration of their danger, these terms can be found in nearly all TOS agreements for all kinds of services. There have been virtually no legal challenges to these kinds of arbitrary termination clauses, but we imagine this will be a growth area for lawyers."

Well, speaking as the female half of a two-geek marriage (13+ years so far), I'd suggest that the answer is twofold.

You have been together long enough that you're getting married. I'm assuming that you spent a reasonable proportion of that time living together. (if not, then disregard this post!)

First of all, allow one other space to follow your interests. That also means that, if/when you have kids, you take some responsibility for amusing them so your other half can have some sanity time. Nothe that while they are under 12 months old you can't schedule this time more than a few hours in advance.

Second, talk. This may (and in my case has) meant PMs mid-raid to arrange who was dropping the kids off at school or making the packed lunches. Yell if you need to, but don't hide in a corner. Be honest. Count to ten before making an angry response to anything.

Oh, and ignore the books - and love each other!

Fountain pens are probably the best technology, but I can't afford one.

There are a lot of good, inexpensive fountain pens out there.

My personal favourite is the Lamy Safari - it can take a wide range of nibs (both standard and italic), and the only tool needed to swap them is a short length of adhesive tape.

They also come in a wide range of colours, which means that I can carry 3 with me and know at a glance which pen is filled with which colour ink.

Ajax on Rails: Aptana + RadRails + RDT

aptanapaul writes "Today, at SDForum's Ruby Conference (http://www.sdforum.org/SDForum/), Aptana announced the taking over of the RDT (Ruby Development Tools — http://rubyeclipse.sourceforge.net/) project, as well as the hiring of RDT's lead developer, Chris Williams. This 'acquisition' rides on the heals of the recent acquisition of the wildly popular RadRails IDE project. Both projects will be integrated into the Aptana IDE within a few months (beta integrations already available for download). The Aptana IDE has already had over 400,000 downloads since its release in August, and together, the projects are approaching 1,000,000 combined downloads.

With most Web 2.0 startups using Ruby on Rails, our embracing of these two projects, which were in need of assistance, will have a tremendous and positive effect on the development community.

The Aptana IDE is an Ajax focused IDE, providing rich development support for JavaScript, CSS, and HTMl, and fully integrates with FireBug for JavaScript debugging. The Aptana IDE is fully open source and free, and strives to be the leading IDE for Ajax development, and now with the addition of RadRails and RDT, the Aptana IDE will make 'Ajax on Rails' a reality.

Visit http://www.aptana.com/ for more details and to download."
