Journal RobertB-DC's Journal: Help me moderate! Underdogs wanted! 27

I've got mod points again, and I'm faced with the age-old problem: how do I find posts worthy of my measly 5 mod points? I've tried looking for worthy, underrated posts, but there are just so many to choose from. Just hit any discussion near the bottom of the page (or in the "old news" column), and most of the newer posts will never get moderated. On the other hand, they're often redundant -- restating ideas that were in previous replies that were buried.

So this week, I'm going to give my mod points to you!

Did you post a Slashdot submission that deserves an upward moderation, but won't likely see the light of day? Or did you find someone else's worthy contribution? Post in reply to this journal, and I'll consider you for one of my "precious" mod points.

Don't try to fool me -- I know all the goatse tricks, and I'm not going to waste my points on a down-mod unless it's really, really deserving and likely to get missed by the editors (and their unlimited points).

My points expire on 8/21/2003. Help me out before it's too late!

Mod Status: 8/18/2003, 0 points used, 5 Mod Points remaining.

Update: I'm sorry, but a comment like this is a troll. It's just one line, with a Limbaugh-like simplicity of thinking. Even if I agreed with the poster, I'd call it a troll.

Then, there's the whiner. I'm so tired of these conspiracy nuts. Slashdot is not out to get them, mod points are not issued based on ideology, and if it's so unfair, he should get his own damned forum. -1, Flamebait. Go away. (The strange thing is that "Flamebait" isn't showing up in the mod box. Does it count as a flavor of "Troll"?)

This is the first time I've used my mod points to mod down twice in the same batch. But boy, did these posts deserve it.

Mod Status: 8/19/2003, 2 points used, 3 Mod Points remaining.

Update: The rest of my mod points went as described in the comments. What burns me is that I only used 4 out of 5 before the deadline... I lost out on the last mod point waiting for that "just right" post.

Better luck next time, I guess. I'll keep my .sig pointing here, though... let's see if this idea pans out.

Mod Status: 8/21/2003, 4 points used, 0 Mod Points remaining.

I haven't had time to post in the last week or so... and I haven't seen any good posts that weren't already +5. But this is a cool idea. I'm sure you'll find some good stuff to moderate. Caleb

I got Mod points this morning, so I too will also take suggestions for moderation. (Just in case Robert gets more than 5 good recommendations.)
  • I personally would have modded it as insightful, but I used up my points this morning.

    • I like it... mod point given. Today's the last day, and I'm swamped, so I would have ended up letting it expire otherwise! I won't be doing much Slashdotting today, so let me know if you find any more.

BTW, I don't know why or when I befriended you. I suspect, though, that it was your .sig and the detailed moderation journal entries that snagged me. More thoughts on that later... back to work now.
      • Not sure who this [slashdot.org] is and I am on the fence to whether or not to give this person the privilege of being my first foe, in the meantime you may want to mark this [slashdot.org] redundant, overrated, heck you might even go for troll.

        • Nah... not worth modding down, really. He (I'm pretty sure "NakedChick" is a he) already posts at 0, so all we'll do is ensure that his Karma hits the floor.

I did mod this one [slashdot.org] up... informative and includes a link. 1 point left... what will I do with it?
  • How about this one [slashdot.org]?
    • You can't post and moderate in the same article...
    • Sorry, dude... your comment is indeed worthy, but I already posted [slashdot.org] in the discussion. Got a quick "5", too -- I wasn't the first to mention the Discovery Channel show, but I included more details.

I know, it's cheating, but being a subscriber means you see the stories earlier, and then you're only a text editor away from posting something on-topic in the first 10 comments. That's almost a guaranteed "5" -- deserved or not. As fun as it is, that built-in bias towards early posters is one of the main reaso
      • Heh, I forgot about that (stupid me). I even clicked on the link to this Journal entry from that story. Maybe it's time for me to get some sleep :). You have a good idea though, I often can't figure out what to do with my mod points. I might try it some time.
        • Hey, I tried to "support your addiction" (from your current .sig), but I got a Sig Fault. :)

Warning: mysql_connect(): Access denied for user: 'con_uzser@host82.localserver.us' (Using password: YES) in /home/hfree/public_html/sub/fr/human.php on line 7

  • I know I'm usually all about modding up, not modding down. But this week has sucked. We're trying to close on a house, but the buyer is... well, I'd better not say anything in a public forum, since Micro$oft is w@tch1ng j00. At work, where I write tax software, the government keeps changing the rules, and our clients (of course) expect us to be one step ahead of Uncle Sam.

So I'm about to mod this sucker down [slashdot.org]. It's kinda funny, kinda... wierd. All it needs is a sprinking of hot grits to be trancendantl
    • I blew it! I was going to wait until the last minute (ready to go home) before using my last mod point... and when I went to pull the trigger, I was outta bullets. My mod points expired sometime between 5pm and 5:30pm Dallas time.
  • This detailed, informative, and insightful comment [slashdot.org] is pretty new, and has already been modded up to 3, but I sure do wish I had some points left. It gives the story (on Japanese development of exoskeletons for the elderly) a needed cultural reference.

Hope it gets found and modded up!
  • I generally think Troll/Offtopic/Flamebait are a waste of modpoints. Mod good articles up as the rules say. I usually metamod trolls/offtopics and flamebait as unfair, hopeing to get rid of moderators who do that.
    • I totally agree... the real bad trolls get moderated down by the unlimited-point editors, so it's something of a waste to mod down. I was just in a foul mood last week, I think. I may get slapped around in M2, but as long as I don't make a habit of it, I think things will even themselves out.

Good thing I don't have mod points this week, though... I'm still in a p!$$y mood.
    • I always mod up, never down. I figure there are enough moro^H^H^H^H people with an agenda that are looking for an excuse to knock posters down already, just because they disagree. I know I've had it done to me.

I also use "fine grading": frex, if a post makes me laugh but is only middling funny, and is already at +3, it's already rated "middling funny", so no reason to further mod it up. Whereas a post that's a belly-breaker, presently at +3, deserves to be modded up a notch. Same for the other +mods.

      And I
  • Talking about modding down being a waste of points... but what posessed someone to moderate this juvenile post [slashdot.org] as +1, Funny? It's rude and dumb. Or maybe I'm just in a bad mood, still.

But if anyone with mod points happens to come across it, maybe they'll throw a point in the wishing well.

Well, a post you made got modded up, and I just happened to follow the link to you're journal. Man, was I surprised. I'm ecstatic that a post I made had such an impact as to get a journal entry (at least partially) about it.

Anyway, I thought since I was featured by you, I could take the time to reply. First of all, I don't think the definition of troll defines a one line post of some guy's opinion, as long as he is on topic. You seem to disagree, however, and I'll note you're thoughts. I am open-minded.

Second of all, I don't consider myself a conspiracy nut. My post was intended to be over the top in order to emphasize my point. It is my opinion that moderation has severy degraded here on Slashdot, and I've been reading since the beginning. I do really enjoy Slashdot though, and have made my share of meaningful posts.

Anyway, I'm simply trying to bring to light and hopefully improve what I think are problems here on Slashdot. I used to post things like that anonymously, but I figured if you want to make a change, you've got to make yourself known. Incidently, I have made more comments pointing out moderation injustices, and plan to keep doing so in the future. You can feel free to mod me down.

Incidently, my post that you referred to was moderated all over the place, which I am proud of. I've never seen so much M1 action on a single post. It ran the gamut of moderation, fluctuating from +5, Insightful to -1, Troll, down and up a couple of times, before settling out to +3, Insightful. Anyway, it must have resonated both positively and negatively with a lot of people, and it sparked an interesting discussion. That's what I wanted, for people to think about the moderation system. That's also what I got.

Anyway, I've added you as a foe, simply so I can follow you're postings. I considered adding you as a friend, because I respect people willing to voice an opinion. However, you are flaming me here in you're jornal (which is you're right, of course). I may switch you over to a friend later, but for now you must be a foe.

I look forward to reading more from you in the future,
    Jared

      • Well, it is official: you are now a friend. I enjoyed your reply to my reply.

I've grown more determined in my efforts to point out moderation flaws. Free free to read my latest (and first) journal entry [slashdot.org] about my latest exploits. It could not have come off as a greater success! Anyway, by your journal entries you seem to want to be an informed moderator. I only hope some of my opinions can strike a chord with you.

        Cheers, friend!

        • You both have interesting thoughts. I, too, find it difficult to use my mod points wisely. A lot of the time I just can't be bothered to spend them because the posts are just neutral. Or there is a post every now and then which at least pretends to be insightful, with lots of details. But I don't know enough about that subject to determine whether it is a troll/clueless post, or if the author really knows his stuff. Regarding positive Windows comments being modded down and such, is that something which act
          • I find myself in the same position you noted -- I don't know enough about Apache, IIS, and open-source in general to know whether to mod up or down. I stuck my head in Windows one day, and it came crashing down on my neck, you know?

I leave moderation of tech-heavy issues to those who know what they're talking about. I've seen posts that looked dead-serious to me modded up to +5, Funny, and I've had to do some Googling to figure out what the joke was.

Down side: the anti-M$ bias may affect the scores. Bi
  • My experience is this. I post very rarely, but if I do, I generally find that my stupider comments get modded up. While comments which I think are quite insightful never get a single mod point. Funny how that happens...

    • I can't speak for how the moderators are responding to your posts, but I'm having ridiculous Karma Whoring success now that I'm a subscriber [slashdot.org]. You get access to stories several minutes before the rest of the world, and with that advantage, I just now got my second on-topic First Post [slashdot.org]!

It's not Slashdot's fault, but posting something early is nearly as good a way to Karma as posting something good. Make it good and early, and you're in Karma Nirvana!
