Comment Re:This is why we can't have nice things (Score 2) 843

Yeah...fascinating world really. But it's not how things works.

You don't have to look far in history to see that. before the US became the clear world leader, it was a time of war and conflict almost everywhere in the world. In fact, just in the last decade, with less than 5% of the world population in conflict, we are living during the most peaceful time in history (counter-intuitive, I know).

Maybe, one time, the humanity will change enough so all armies will be dismantled. But, for now, we need hat the US stay the clear leader for a little more longer.

Who said it had anything to do with efficiency? Of course you'd rather stand off and shoot them down with a missile but that's not always possible. Rules of engagement and emergent situations in war sometimes result in the fight getting close and ugly.

I'm quite sure the military said the same thing to Churchill when they showed him the plan for the HMS Prince of Wales and as I said, in the past battleship were equipped for powerful close encounter that worked well...until a new technology (aircraft carrier) make them irrelevant. You don't see much battleship these day.

My point is, even if we may see a few dogfight if a war erupt, will it still be a relevant factor in that conflict? Because, as for now, the Dogfighting capability of fighters seem to be less than 0.01% of total uses.

They've been saying that since Vietnam and there is a reason fighters still have cannons.

Yeah....I've saw the Vietnam example time and time again...but it's closest to WW2 than today (1954-1975). It's already 40 years ago.

The closest Dogfighting recorded is in 1999 during the Balkans conflict, but it was 5 untrained pilot from Yugoslav Air Force again the US. Not what I would consider a decent reference.

Unlike Fallout's motto, war changes.

Comment Is Dogfighting really that important? (Score 2) 843

If a war were to break up, is Dogfighting really "the" efficient way to take care of fighter? With all new modern weaponry (AAM, SAM, laser etc.) I'm not completely sure if this feature is still relevant in modern time.

I mean, the british may had the most advanced battleship of its time during WW2, they still got utterly destroyed by aircraft carrier.

They have had kits that do not require a 3d printer for that for a long time now. There are a few different companies offering it. Here are a couple that I know of.

And I there there is a clone a willy kit somewhere but cannot remember the URL for it. All of these options are much cheaper than a 3d printer and you can put vibrators in them as well as glow in the dark colors and even lights. Lots of fun- just don't make a bunch of them and hand them out in the secret Santa at work next year. Trust me, it's not as fun or funny as you might think.

I'm surprised that you summarize this awesome game like this. Except for a few small and open map, you can't really use this strategy (and it's easily countered by any equally skilled player).

My personal favorite was always a map called Drake's Ravine (http://supcom.wikia.com/wiki/Drake%27s_Ravine). Basically two elevated base separated by a huge ravine that favour defense and where you need to control that ravine and it's resource to gain an edge. Again a skilled player the game almost always reach end-game where the one with the most nuke and huge experimental killer machine wins.

Don't get me wrong, I care a damn lot about the planet, but is recycling help the planet that much?

I mean, in 2014
How much % of world total pollution is avoided because of recycling?
How much % of world total greenhouse gas is avoided because of recycling?
How much % of world total landfill is avoided because of recycling?

And I mean the real number that are recycled, not the quantity that enter recycling center because half is sent to the landfill anyway and another half is lost in the transforming process (except maybe aluminium and some others)

Unless someone convince me of recycling efficiency, I think we should start thinking about other mean.I know there's still a lot of issue, but plasma gasification seem to have a bigger potential than recycling.

1. All the diagrams give the impression that it will be like people flying through tubes as in Futurama. Instead you will be sealed inside a metallic "bullet", that runs in a metallic tube - no windows for you (sort of like James Bond in The Living Daylights). It's a pity if you have any sort of claustrophobia.

If you dislike the idea of long-range transportation without windows, I have bad news for you...
http://motherboard.vice.com/re...

2. While the device doesn't run in a complete vacuum, it runs in an atmosphere that is low to the point of being unbreathable. But the device doesn't contain any onboard air supply - instead it relies on the driving compressor/fan assembly to compress the air to a human sustainable amount. So if the device loses power for any reason (electrical, mechanical, computational) then you better be able to hold your breath for a long long time.

Really? Are you seriously so close-minded to think of this as a problem? I guess you got this idea by taking airliner as reference which is simply dumb. The reason why airliner need onboard air supply is because there's not air available in case the cabin pressurisation fail. But in Hyperloop case, engineering emergency exit system seem far more logical than oxygen mask.

3. There was no indication that the loop itself was anything more than a single tube. Thus there is no capability to bypass any section. So if a device fails, all devices that are already in transit and behind it are screwed (see 2 above).

Yeah...if they ever present a working prototype, I'm sure they'll simply "forgot" to address safety issue like "what will happens if the Hyperloop fail (or hit an iceberg) in the middle of the desert?"

Submission + - Notepad++ Leaves SourceForge (notepad-plus-plus.org)

An anonymous reader writes: SourceForge was a good place; unfortunately, sometimes good places don't last.

Recently SF hijacked its hosted projects to distribute their wrapped crapware:

SourceForge grabs GIMP for Windows' account, wraps installer in bundle-pushing adware
Black “mirror”: SourceForge has now taken over Nmap audit tool project
What happened to Sourceforge? The full story between VLC and Sourceforge

Obviously, the paid component per installation system is one of their important income generating scams. I would be fine with that, if they were the actual owners of the legitimate software. The real problem is, they are polluting these open source software installations for the purpose of filling their pockets by this scam, and worst of all, without even notifying the authors/creators of this software, while the creators are struggling against such parasitic software in order to keep their installers cleaner and safer.

Such a shameless policy should be condemned, and the Notepad++ project will move entirely out of SourceForge.

I humbly request that Notepad++ users not encourage such scams, and educate others not to download any software from SourceForge. I request as well that the project owners on SourceForge move out of SourceForge, in order to preserve the purpose of the Open Source Community and encourage the works of true authors/creators.

Submission + - Philae comet lander wakes up (bbc.com)

techtech writes: "The European Space Agency (Esa) says its comet lander, Philae, has woken up and contacted Earth.
Philae, the first spacecraft to land on a comet, was dropped on to the surface of Comet 67P by its mothership, Rosetta, last November.
It worked for 60 hours before its solar-powered battery ran flat.
The comet has since moved nearer to the sun and Philae has enough power to work again, says the BBC's science correspondent Jonathan Amos.
An account linked to the probe tweeted the message, "Hello Earth! Can you hear me?""
