The only Fallout game which was team combat was Fallout Tactics, which Bethesda stated is not considered canon. And I for one find the new FPS/RPG genre to be a lot more exciting than straight RPGs. As for the turn-based combat, I like the new VATS system... A nice compromise, I think.

Last year we spent about $10 billion locking up nearly 900,000 people for cannabis-related crimes.

Instead of enriching criminal enterprises and failing to keep drugs away from children, why don't we abolish the Federal Controlled Substances Act? It would (at least) halve the murder rate, and generate billions of dollars in tax revenue -- not to mention alleviating the most racist policy failure since slavery.

Tax and regulate drugs -- for the children!

It's funny. Laugh.

Joss Whedon's "Doctor Horrible" Set To Launch 245

Ololiuhqui writes "During the writer's strike, Joss Whedon came up with a musical idea. Now his diabolical plan is about to be unleashed in the form of a streaming-only release, with a DVD shortly to follow. The three-part Doctor Horrible series stars Neil Patrick Harris as the eponymous doctor, Felicia Day as the woman of his dreams, and Nathan Fillion as the doctor's nemesis, Captain Hammer. Reportedly made for 'less than six figures,' the series has already received rave reviews and will no doubt showcase Whedon's musical facility, as well as his proven ability to squeeze the most out of a budget."

Submission + - Former ONDCP Exec admits agency works w/o data (huffingtonpost.com)

glarbl_blarbl writes: "In an article on The Huffington Post, Former ONDCP Strategist John Carnevale states:

Though Congress created ONDCP to formulate research-driven and performance-based policy, assess and modify policy through performance measures, and give a precise accounting of the federal drug control budget, ONDCP fails at all of those tasks. In the 90's ONDCP created a performance measurement system for evaluating the effects of its policies on drug use, drug availability, and the negative consequences of drug use; however, this decade, no such performance measurement system has been utilized. As a consequence, policy is now flying blind resulting in lost opportunities for more success.

Carnevale, who is responsible for the creation of the above-mentioned 'performance measurement system', offers the following recipe to fix America's Drug Problem.

The central task of ONDCP — and what must now become the central political debate — is determining how best to combine and fund the five essential ingredients of drug control policy: prevention, treatment, domestic law enforcement, international or source country programs, and interdiction.

I understand why the people who actually work at the ONDCP don't consider tax and regulation (they are required by law to oppose any movement toward legalization anywhere in the country), but how can someone with a Ph.D. in Economics get away with advocating the continuation of such a huge and destructive black market?"

Submission + - Open Source Manufacturing

cenc writes: "NPR.org is running a story about Open Source Manufacturing and repairable products, and the drive to get companies to design products that can be reused and repaired from the start rather than thrown away when they break. Part of this drive is to provide plans for consumers to easily repair and make use of products."

Journal Journal: Posting as Anonymous Coward killed my moderation!

I've been hanging around /. for a couple of years now, and have built up positive karma - so I've been getting mod points fairly regularly for about a year now. I was well aware that posting in a discussion in which I had spent mod points would unmoderate those comments. I'm totally cool with that and understand the rationale behind that policy. But I know I've seen other people post comments as an AC and include their userid and a note saying "posting AC to preserve spen

Bloggers or High Schoolers, Where is the Literary Talent? 284

word munger writes "A few weeks ago, Chad Orzel read a New York Times article which analyzed the best high school writing on the new SAT test. The Times' writer appeared surprised that the best high school writing was so bad. Chad then wondered if the best bloggers could do any better under the same conditions and it was put to the test. Over 500 people tried the timed online test, but just 109 scoreable responses resulted. Professionals graded all the responses which were then posted on a web site where readers can rate the essays themselves, as well as find out the professional score. So who's a better writer, a blogger or a high schooler? You can also read Chad's analysis — or better yet, you can decide for yourself."
