Is dumpster diving ID theft really that much of a threat from old receipts, which generally have no "interesting" information? Seems to me all the juicy ID data has gone digital...

I just compromise - when I have a large amount of old paperwork I need to dispose of, rather than waste time overheating my shredder, I just toss piles into a sink of hot water, stir a bit, crumple, tear, knead, then put in a trash bag, preferably on "fish night", after dinner.

Since I work from home, I can wait until just before the trash pickup before putting out my bin... good enough for the risk.

Assuming the bottom of the pile is the oldest....

1) decide how tall you would like the pile.
2) move that much of the pile to a temp location.
3) remove the remaining pile to the garbage/recycle/shred bin, as appropriate
4) move the temp pile back to the production pile area.

You never said you were looking for anything... sorting piles of kipple seems to be a rather dull hobby.

My family got WhatsApp while traveling in Europe, with no data plan on our US phones. Since most hotels have free WiFi, it was the low cost way for my wife and I to communicate with our kids when we split up for a week to different countries.

Back home, it is still being used, as it is handier to group people than SMS/MMS... I was thinking of paying for it when my free year was up this summer, but now that FB bought it, I will drop it. I am not a FB user.

I remember going to the pub on a University of California school...

They even served a combo called the "Irishman's lunch" - a Quart of beer and Potato Skins. I am sure that is no longer "PC", and I am not even sure if the UC system has gone "dry" or not, but, back in the day it was the best thing, even above "toastada Tuesday".

Having credit cards, and even using them does not mean living on credit or being in debt.

My "main" credit card gives me 2% back on everything I purchase. Every time there is $50 or more it is deposited directly into my account. No fuss, no muss. 2% off everything it purchases.

I pay my bill every month. Zero cost to me, 2% back vs paying cash (writing a check, whatever).

I charge my cable, telephone, newspaper (yes), cell phone, and a few other "no fee for credit card auto-pay" bills with this card. I get several hundred dollars a year back, so why not? It is not like "they" don't already have my phone records if they want them....

Besides, there are some things that are hard to do without a "credit" card.

All things dull and ugly,
All creatures short and squat,

Each little wasp that stings,
He made their brutish venom,
He made their horrid wings.

All things sick and cancerous,
All evil great and small,
All things foul and dangerous,
The Lord God made them all.

Each nasty little hornet,
Each beastly little squid.
Who made the spikey urchin?
Who made the sharks? He did.

All things scabbed and ulcerous,
All pox both great and small.

If there were one thing that could be different about the US Constitution that would make it better - it would be a 4th branch of government that had limited and enumerated powers over the other 3 branches. This fourth branch of government would be drafted, at random from among taxpayers. They would only meet once a year and all they could do is have absolute veto power, with 2/3 majority over ANYTHING that has been decided by the other branches of government in the last 2 years.

Kind of a final sanity check, with teeth.
