Last_Available_Usern writes: The U.S. Supreme Court today dealt a potentially fatal blow to Aereo, an Internet service that allows customers to watch broadcast TV programs on mobile devices by renting a small DVR and antenae (in supported cities) to record and then retransmit local programming on-demand over the internet.

u38cg writes: Ross William Ulbricht, known as "Dread Pirate Roberts," was arrested in San Francisco yesterday and has been charged with one count each of narcotics trafficking conspiracy, computer hacking conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy, according to a court filing. Silk Road has been shut down and some $3.6m in Bitcoin seized.

The question is — how?

As a kid/teen, some of my favorites were by William Sleator. A lot of sci-fi staples were introduced to me in his books (cloning, 4th/5th/nth dimensions, black holes, telepathy, time travel). My favorites were House of Stairs and Interstellar Pig.

I also enjoyed the Tripods series by John Christopher.

Also, I'm seconding the Danny Dunn and Tom Swift series. I think the series of Swift I read was the Tom Swift, Jr. from the 50's and 60's.

Don't worry, friend! Even though you "deleted" it, your Facebook account is never really deleted! For your convenience, of course! Just log back in and it's all still there, and now you're back whether or not you want to be! Hooray!

I deleted my account about a month and a half ago. Facebook said they would keep it for 15 days, then it would be truly deleted. I waited about a month before I tested it, but it now claims to have no record of my login. My brother also reports that I don't show up as an inactive friend, but I can't verify that.

Mind you, I have no doubt that all of my information is still archived for eternity on their servers, but my account is for all practical intents and purposes deleted.

On average, participants at peak intoxication solved about nine problems correctly, versus approximately six winners for the sober crowd. It took an average of 11.5 seconds for intoxicated men to generate a correct solution, compared with 15.2 seconds for sober men.

Hugh Pickens writes writes: "Ben Grubb reports that an iPhone app that essentially allowed users to stalk women nearby using a location-based social networking service has been pulled from the iTunes app store by its developer after an outcry of criticism including a comment by Gizmodo labelling the "Girls Around Me" app as the "world's creepiest" app and a comment in The New York Times Bits blog, which said it "definitely" won the prize for being "too creepy". The "Girls Around Me" app utilized publicly available data to show a map with women who had checked-in to locations nearby using Foursquare and let users view Facebook information of those ladies if they had tied their Facebook account to their Foursquare account and if their Facebook account privacy settings were lax enough to allow any user to access it. The promotional website used for marketing the app states that the service "helps you see where nearby girls are checking in, and shows you what they look like and how to get in touch, adding "In the mood for love, or just after a one-night stand? Girls Around Me puts you in control! Reveal the hottest nightspots, who's in them, and how to reach them". Foursquare yanked the Girls Around Me app's access to its data, which in turn led to the app's developer removing it from iTunes as it didn't work properly. In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, the company behind the app defended its creation: "Since the app's launch till last Friday nobody ever raised a privacy concern because, again, it is clearly stated that Girls Around Me cannot show the user more data than [what Foursqure or Facebook] already does.""

Yahoo's board released a letter that Yang wrote announcing his retirement, saying, in part: "My time at Yahoo!, from its founding to the present, has encompassed some of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life. However, the time has come for me to pursue other interests outside of Yahoo! As I leave the company I co-founded nearly 17 years ago, I am enthusiastic about the appointment of Scott Thompson as Chief Executive Officer and his ability, along with the entire Yahoo! leadership team, to guide Yahoo! into an exciting and successful future."

thebchuckster writes: Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope discovered a fourth moon orbiting the icy dwarf planet Pluto. The tiny, new satellite – temporarily designated P4 — was uncovered in a Hubble survey searching for rings around the dwarf planet.

The new moon is the smallest discovered around Pluto. It has an estimated diameter of 8 to 21 miles (13 to 34 km). By comparison, Charon, Pluto's largest moon, is 648 miles (1,043 km) across, and the other moons, Nix and Hydra, are in the range of 20 to 70 miles in diameter (32 to 113 km).

White is opposite yellow. Blue is opposite green. Are you sure you hadn't just forgotten how to solve a Rubik's Cubes?

White/yellow is the Western color scheme; White/Blue was more common in Japan, but I've had one or two of them here in the States, too.

The move to allow users to shut off conversation view, also called "message threading," comes after months of gripes on the part of some users. "The way Gmail organizes mail into conversations is like cilantro. You either love it — and, like me, enjoy the nice citrusy, herbal finish it gives to everything from salsa to curry — or you hate it," wrote Google Technical Lead Wiltse Carpenter in a post on Google's Gmail blog.

MicroBerto writes: One year ago, I was thrown into a reality TV pilot titled Crash Test, which aired on Spike TV on April 27th, 2010. On Crash Test, we used top-notch stuntmen and stuntwomen to recreate accidents and crime scenes to see who was really guilty or innocent.

I was the “biomedical scientist” of the bunch, and took measurements to determine if the real-life accidents would have really occurred in our simulations had we not been using professional stuntmen and women. Here is what I learned from being the geek on the set of a Reality TV show.
