Submission + - Google, Sun Headed for Showdown Over Android (itworld.com)

narramissic writes: "There's trouble brewing between Google and Sun over the way Android handles Java. Google wrote its own virtual machine (called Davlik) for Android instead of using JME, most likely as a way to get around licensing issues with Sun, said Stefano Mazzocchi, a developer and board member at Apache Labs. If Google used any of Sun's intellectual property to build Dalvik, Sun could sue Google for patent infringement. But here's where it gets interesting ... Sun is a vocal advocate for open source and it would 'hardly appease the open source community to sue Google over an open source software stack,' said Mazzocchi."

Submission + - iPhone SIM-Unlock done (for a fee)! (engadget.com) 1

prxp writes: "Engadget is running a story on a company named iPhoneSIMfree.com that has been able to SIM-unlock the iPhone via software. The iPhoneSIMfree.com team is planning on selling the solution for a small (?) fee. According to the story the unlock is legitimately and works even after you fully restore your iPhone. Although Engadget is claiming "they're officially the first to break Apple's SIM locks on the iPhone", earlier this week George Hotz, a 17-year old former member of the iPhone Development Team, has also been able to SIM-unlock the iPhone, but his technique was hardware based and too complicated for the non-expert. It seems the race is over now. Who came first after all?"

Gooseygoose writes: "
A couple of days ago I was reading the CNN/YouTube Democratic presidential debate transcript. Of course I am always interested to hear what the candidates have to say about energy. There were a lot of good comments, and the usual spattering of dumb comments. But I won't dissect them right now. What got me to thinking were the comments of John Edwards...

Submission + - Red Hat to Enter the Desktop Market

head_dunce writes: "It looks like Red Hat is going to release their Global Desktop Linux in September and give Ubuntu a challenge for the Linux desktop market. I'm a little confused by the article though, it claims Red Hat Global Desktop "would be sold with a one-year subscription to security updates." Shouldn't the security updates be open, and the customer support be subscription based?"
