No matter how much space you take up with your PR waffle it is still PR waffle. Corporations are owned by shareholders and the shareholders have representation for the business vehicle they own, the corporation and thus taxes should be paid. If corporations do not pay taxes then every rich shit head will shift all their income into a corporation and not pay any tax (their PR=B$ plan). Another tax bracket is required for income in excess of 1 million dollars a 50% tax bracket. All taxes should be charged on local revenue regardless of off shore costs. Those off shore costs should simply be audited and the profits in the taxed as those profits were based upon local revenue. Any country internationally recognised as a tax haven should be economically ostracised and it's currency devalued to zero. All corporate officers should be tested for psychopathy, if tested positive for psychopathy, they should be banned from holding office in public corporations.

Didn't say it was. I just said NASA should abandon it to whomever wants to pay to keep it operating. Prettty sure its past its original end of life anyway which I think was 2010.

If Russia doesn't want to play nice, or pay to run it themselves, I doubt ESA, Canada or Japan will be able to keep it going if the U.S. pulls out.

The Misleading Fliers Comcast Used To Kill Off a Local Internet Competitor 250

Jason Koebler (3528235) writes In the months and weeks leading up to a referendum vote that would have established a locally owned fiber network in three small Illinois cities, Comcast and SBC (now AT&T) bombarded residents and city council members with disinformation, exaggerations, and outright lies to ensure the measure failed. The series of two-sided postcards painted municipal broadband as a foolhardy endeavor unfit for adults, responsible people, and perhaps as not something a smart woman would do. Municipal fiber was a gamble, a high-wire act, a game, something as "SCARY" as a ghost. Why build a municipal fiber network, one asked, when "internet service [is] already offered by two respectable private businesses?" In the corner, in tiny print, each postcard said "paid for by SBC" or "paid for by Comcast." The postcards are pretty absurd and worth a look.

Lots Of People Really Want Slideout-Keyboard Phones: Where Are They? 544

Bennett Haselton writes: I can't stand switching from a slideout-keyboard phone to a touchscreen phone, and my own informal online survey found a slight majority of people who prefer slideout keyboards even more than I do. Why will no carrier make them available, at any price, except occasionally as the crummiest low-end phones in the store? Bennett's been asking around, of store managers and users, and arrives at even more perplexing questions. Read on, below.

Quite simply because Gaza has a remarkable resemblance to the Warsaw Ghetto http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W... during World War II and the solution put forward by Israel for attacks coming from the ghetto are identical to those carried by by the Nazi SS troops. The big difference is the US government participated in the prosecution of those who carried those acts during the 2nd world war and are doing everything possible to hinder prosecution now. All apparently because so many US congressmen have been bought of by campaign contributions from the Israel Mossad very profitable campaign contribution considering how much free stuff Israel gets from the US in return literally millions for billions.

Fine, blame the US government. They publicly admitted knowing the separatists had a high altitude missile system from July the 4th on, apparently they were looking for fireworks because they told no one, until the civilian aircraft was shot down by a trained crew of Russian speaking Ukraines whose alliances are still unknown as they have not been made available for harsh interrogation techniques as well as a threat of execution upon prosecution for the crime they committed. Apparently volunteers were available to fire the Ukraine missile system but not volunteers available to stand trial and put the blame upon those who orchestrated this. Keeping in mind only the Ukraine government could have provided clearance for the civilian aircraft and it did so after July the 4th, long after 'losing' the missile system.

As for missile fire from Russia into the Ukraine, US approved retaliation for artillery fire one nation into another has been categorically made clear in Israel's example and there were those Russian deaths in Russia. US approved response includes everything from return fire, through to air attacks and even ground assault or is that only applicable for Israel and Russia is denied that response.

Probably one of the best things NASA could do at this point is abandon ISS, stop paying for it, and tell the Russians its all theirs. There is a fair chance they would fly Americans to it for free rather than get saddled with that boat anchor.

If the Russians don't want it either its time to deorbit it. It would free up a LOT of money for more useful endeavors. Its never been good for much of anything, certainly nothing to justify the staggering price tag

SpaceX will have the ability to put astronauts in to LEO in a few years. Its not like its a crisis, there is very little for people to do in LEO at the moment other than to be lab rats for zero G physiology studies. You would think they would have done most of that work by now.

About the only point in putting people in space at all is as colonists, persumably on Mars. You can do just about everything else way better and cheaper with robots.

So until you are ready to fly people to Mars to stay, stop getting your panties in a bunch about getting them to LEO.

Satellite Images Show Russians Shelling Ukraine 582

U.S. officials today made public satellite imagery which they say proves that Russian forces have been shelling eastern Ukraine in a campaign to assist rebel groups fighting Ukraine’s government. The U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which released the civilian-taken satellite images Sunday, said they show visual evidence that Russia has been firing shells across the border at Ukrainian military forces. Officials also said the images show that Russia-backed separatists have used heavy artillery, provided by Russia, in attacks on Ukrainian forces from inside Ukraine. One image dated July 25/26 shows what DNI claims is “ground scarring” on the Russian side of the border from artillery aimed at Ukrainian military units in Ukraine, as well as the resultant ground craters on the Ukrainian side of the border:

It sounds like this transformer had its center tap grounded and was the path to ground on one side of a ground loop as the geomagnetic field moved under pressure from a CME, inducing a common-mode current in the long-distance power line. A gas pipeline in an area of poor ground conductivity in Russia was also destroyed, it is said, resulting in 500 deaths.

One can protect against this phenomenon by use of common-mode breakers and perhaps even overheat breakers. The system will not stay up but nor will it be destroyed. This is a high-current rather than high-voltage phenomenon and thus the various methods used to dissipate lightning currents might not be effective.
