Journal Journal: Funny prank 1

Go to this website: http://www.shaveeverywhere.com/

After you watch the commercial, click the send to a friend link at the bottom. Pose as a friends wife/GF/SO and put in your friends email address.

Then they get an email from their wife, basically asking asking them to shave their $#%^ #$^*#, and #$^%$*.

The whole thing makes me entirely uncomfortable.

Journal Journal: Flags of Our Fathers (short and spoiler free) 4

I recently read the book "Flags of Our Fathers" about the invasion of Iwo Jima, and the flag raisers of the same.

Very very good book. Gives a whole new definition of the word hero, that I don't think I ever comprehended before. I cannot give the book justice by describing it here. Go buy it.

I then went and saw the movie on Saturday. While movies are rarely as good as the book, and it's also true in this instance you should go see that before it's pulled from the theaters. Even if it means you have to see the movie before you read the book. That's not the recommended order for this movie but since it's been out a while, you might have to.

They said when "Saving Private Ryan" came out, that it had the most realistic battle scenes up to that point. I think "Flags of Our Fathers" has set the new standard. I was tense the whole time the invasion was happening.

A couple of things that I wish they had worked into the movie though was the fact that the Japanese had pointed their anti-aircraft guns at the beach. They showed them, but didn't mention what type of guns they were. I think that would have added to the drama of the fight.

Another thing was that they thought there was about 12,000 soldiers on the island but that there was closer to twice that. In the movie they do say that there is 12,000 (which was accurate for the time they were talking about it) but never correct that.

This movie was so good, that at the end of the movie, nobody in the theater moved an inch or said anything. They just all watched the credits roll. I guess they were having a tough time letting the message and the appalling nature of the battle sink in.

Journal Journal: Need some X-Mas dough? 3

Our company was just bought out by another company. We have a Dec 14th deadline to migrate our offices that weren't bought, and web site stuff to outside srevers.

They told me I have 2 weeks to do it. I said I can't meet that deadline, and if they want me to meet it then they need to allow me to get a temp or something to help.

Good with PHP or CGI, ApacheSSL or Postfix/LDAP? I'm not sure if they want someone here in the Seattle area, or not yet.

Nothing too fancy is required. Just some simple parsing of forms and setting up of LDAP, and Postfix.

Journal Journal: Road Rage Story 7

A funny anec-dote to take the edge off of TL's day.

A friend of mine was also a victim of road rage once. This friend N had cut somebody off on the freeway trying to make his exit. The person he had cut off was really really upset about this and proceeded to chase N through the city streets. The maniac[1] then pulled a gun and started waving it out the window. N just ignored him and kept driving. The road widened into 4 lanes and the guy came alongside N and rolled his passenger window down and started yelling and pointing the gun out the window while they were going down the road.

N happened to be on his way to his nephews birthday party (IIRC the nephew was around 10). N had stopped by the army surplus store earlier that day and had bought an old drilled-out grenade. When he saw that gun he grabbed the grenade, pretended to pull the pin and threw it into the guys car.

The guy drove his car off the road into the ditch, abandoned the car as soon as he could get it to stop, and took off into the bushes in an effort to get away from the explosion that never came.

[1] maniac, for purposes of this story refers to the man with the gun, not the grenade.

Journal Journal: stranded! reloaded 6

aye carumba!

That was the single worst travelling experience of my entire life.

Originally I was supposed to be travelling for about 6 hours -- from Seattle to Maryville TN, with one short stop in Denver.

If you read my previous JE you'd know how that worked out for me.

Here's the quick rundown of my adventure as I don't want to fill in all the agrivating details.

Seattle -> Denver: flight was delayed missed connection from Denver. Layover is at that point 14 hours. Hotels are booked.

rescheduled for Denver ->DC: takeoff is aborted as nose is picking up, the fuel filter on the starboard side failed, and we blew the tires trying to stop.

add 2 more hours to layover (16 total hours in the Denver airport). cusomter service says NOT to board the replacement plane if they board later than 10:30 as I will miss my connection if the plane take off even 1 second after 11.

Replacement plane comes we board right at 10:30. we taxi out. that plane is busted as well. Maintenance comes and fixes the plane on the tarmac we take off at 11:15 (see earlier note about the 'magic time' of 11.

Flight makes it to DC 2.5 hours late, I have about 10 minutes to get from concourse D to concourse A. I get my stuff and enter the aisle before the plane has stopped taxiing. I run. I run with every ounce of strength in my sleep deprived body. I run for the tram that goes to concourse A. Tram driver sees me running and holds the door. I make it to my gate in concourse A with exactly 5 minutes to spare....man at ticketing counter says the plane took off 10 minutes ago. 15 minutes early.

layover in DC: 6 hours.

Flight from DC -> Knoxville: this flight was un-eventful, and I was really happy to have 'upgraded' to the emergency exit row. (at this point it doesn't take much to make me happy).

I got to my hotel here in maryville at around 2am (friday) I was supposed to be in wednesday night.

I hate I hate I hate United. This unholy scab upon the face of modern air travel.

Journal Journal: STRANDED! 10

Ok this sucks. Flight departed and arrived late, missed my connection, and I'm stranded in Colorado until 8am. As of now it's 7pm.

I won't get to Maryville TN, until 6pm tomorrow, and I was supposed to be there at 11pm tonight.

*sigh*

Journal Journal: politcal poll part deux 8

ok lets try this again. Read the rules before posting. (jeremiah I'm looking at you ;)

I'm going to try a little political experiment. I think that most people associate themselves with a party based mostly on who they currently hate the most with little or no understanding of the philosphy behind the party they are currently supporting.

The rules are simple. Read the descriptions, post which number mostly fits with your political ideology. If you catch on which one is which, don't post the answer, though feel free to email me and ask if you choose. No flame wars on which one is more right (pun intended) than any others.

I'm just going to post the 3 big ones as I see it (so no flames about that). Maybe if this works out, I'll do another with more options, for now you will jsut have to deal with 3. :-)

#1 ____ is a political philosophy advocating that individuals should be free to do whatever they wish with their person or property, as long as they do not infringe on the same liberty of others. There are two types of ____. One type hold as a fundamental maxim that all human interaction should be voluntary and consensual. They maintain that the initiation of force against another person or his property, with "force" meaning the use of physical force, the threat of it, or the commission of fraud against someone who has not initiated physical force, threat, or fraud, is a violation of that principle (many of these are individualist anarchists or anarcho-capitalists). The other type comes from a consequentialist or utilitarian standpoint. Instead of having moral prohibitions against initiation of force, these support a limited government that engages in the minimum amount of initiatory force (such as levying taxes to provide some public goods such as defense and roads, as well as some minimal regulation), because they believe it to be necessary to ensure maximum individual freedom (these are minarchists). ____ do not oppose force used in response to initiatory aggressions such as violence, fraud or trespassing. ____ favor an ethic of self-responsibility and strongly oppose the welfare state, because they believe forcing someone to provide aid to others is ethically wrong, ultimately counter-productive, or both.

#2 ____ is the ideology of governing a nation as a ____, with an emphasis on Liberty and rule by the people. ____ always stands in opposition to monarchy, aristocracy, oligarchy and dictatorship. More broadly, it refers to a political system that protects liberty, especially by incorporating a rule of law that cannot be arbitrarily ignored by the government. Much of the literature deals with the issue of what sort of values and behavior by the citizens is necessary if the ____ is to survive and flourish; the emphasis has been on widespread citizen participation, civic virtue, and opposition to corruption.

#3 ____ is a form of government for a nation state, or for an organization in which all the citizens have a voice in shaping policy. Today ____ is often assumed to be liberal ____, but there are many other varieties and the methods used to govern differ. While the term ____ is often used in the context of a political state, the principles are also applicable to other bodies, such as universities, labor unions, public companies, or civic organizations.
