Comment Re:Why do I care what Harrison Ford thinks? (Score 2) 299

Yes. At one time, he was in six of the ten most prolific box office successes of all friggin' time, counting the Star Wars trilogy and the Indiana Jones cash machine.

According to a halfhearted internet search, he's worth 200+ million and married to Ally McBeal.

He could be easily mistaken for someone living the dream.

I'm sure these estimates are based on available data and proffered by folks more qualified than I to render them.

But. We have only a limited understanding of conditions on a world like Saturn, and extrapolating from a small pool of data is often inaccurate.

Remember how the Mars rovers' lifespan was greatly underestimated? It was believed the sand would eventually collect on the solar power arrays due to the planet's winds. As it happened, the winds actually helped keep them clear.

I hope it doesn't turn out like other substances that accumulate in us (the heavy metals) with no apparent ill effect until toxic levels are attained.

If forced to wager the electricity bill money, however, my hunch is that's the way to bet.

In Water for Elephants, drunks given to jake leg referred to the additive responsible for their loss of locomotion as a plasticizer... The compound was added to the thinly veiled 'medicinal' product as a cloaking chemical for the government's testing process during the Depression. It was later determined to be a flocking nerve agent.

It could be argued the free dissemination of the world's collective knowledge should be widely available to every corner of the green planet.

It's easy to see how much more valuable access to Wiki is to the average dotter (probably not so much for the Facebook-addicted) and every government would have a differing perspective what was good for their citizens.

Submission + - ALS Treatment Hope: Researchers Discover How to Stop Brain Rejecting Drugs (ibtimes.co.uk)

concertina226 writes: Scientists at Thomas Jefferson University have discovered that blocking certain types of proteins in the brain may help drugs that have so far failed to treat Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to be able to work.

Currently there is only one drug in the world, called Riluzole, that is approved for treating ALS. Riluzole works by suppressing the activity of glutamate – a chemical messenger in the central nervous system.

Unfortunately, Riluzole has been shown to lose its effectiveness in patients as the disease progresses, and it only prolongs the lives of ALS patients for between three to six months.

The researchers decided to analyse the brains of mice infected with ALS, instead of analysing healthy animals. They identified two specific pumps in the brain that interact with Riluzole, namely P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and breast-cancer resistant protein.

When they blocked these two types of proteins by treating the mice with an experimental compound called Elacridar together with Riluzole, the scientists found that the treatments extended the life span of the mice and alleviated some of the disease's symptoms, such as improving and preserving muscle strength.
