for a case, check this one out: streacom fc8-evo

supports well over 75w tdp. so a 45w tdp is no problem at all, even at full load.

there is a case that is identical to the fc8-evo by 'perfect home theater' (in the boston area) and their case is quite a bit cheaper and pretty much the same thing as the streacom version.

you have to buy a mini-itx board and you also have to be careful if you need the 'long heat pipes' or 'short heat pipes', based on where the cpu socket is located. the perfect home theater store will sell you either (or both) of the HP lengths so you are covered.

highly recommended for a silent and super fast pc.

all modern os's wake up and do things, on their own. this competes with user tasks. having more cpus or threads or cores helps with this.

so, yes, i5 and i7 are helpful for even 'simple' desktop users. and my htpc is an i7, with 8 real cores, so that my movies are even that much resistant to being jittered by other proc's waking up and demanding cpu time.

I know what MS is up to and I can deal with them. they are not into wholesale spying and being *everywhere* on the web (can't avoid a google tracking site; everyone, now, uses them, sadly).

but google has depths of evil that we have not even seen yet. they have shown their true colors. they don't sell things TO US, they SELL US. that's a world of difference.

as I posted just a few minutes before, many of us use (used) community colleges as a way to save a LOT of money on the 'useless first 2 years' that is mostly BS anyway. english is english; chem 101 is chem 101. calc 101 is calc 101, no matter where you go (for all intents and purposes).

I LOVE the idea of us finally giving our own people a direct benefit to the huge riches that are locked away in this country. there's zero reason why we can't fund 100% of our people to go to school! other MUCH LESS RICH countries seem to do this. no reason we can't.

you'll never see a republican suggest free school (unless its a 'jesus is god' school, of course). this is one of the first good ideas obama has shown, and one that is much more linked with the democratic party.

in fact, I used it (back in the 80's) as a way to save a LOT of money on the first year or 2 of my own college experience; the quality was as good as my other 4 yr schools (that I later went on to), it was something like $18/credit (!!) and I was able to live at home and have an easy transition from HS to college. going straight to college is a big shock to many and for me, I had that 'half step' and so I had a much easier and more fun time.

nice old classic tek test gear. highly in demand by collectors and those who appreciate good old fashioned engineering and build quality. the last of the 'repairable' tek scopes, pretty much (and even this is borderline repairable, with many custom chips).

still, a few new caps, a new battery backed nvram module and you have another 20 or 30 yrs left on this scope.

search that same forum for other old test gear (power designs (brand) power supplies are also built like tanks and run forever. I have 4 of them at home in my lab and they date from the mid 50's to early 60's. still hold their precision and would cost $5k to $10k today if you could even buy them.

I have audio gear that I personally built in the 70's and 80's that still runs fine (hafler amps, etc).

today, its hard to find things built to last, but it USED to be the norm "before your mother was born", so to speak.
