Alleged Bitcoin Scam Leaves Millions Missing 148

First time accepted submitter OutOnARock writes Yahoo Finance is reporting on the latest Bitcoin scam, this time from Hong Kong. "Investors in a Hong Kong-based Bitcoin trading company fear they have fallen victim to a scam after it closed down, a lawmaker said Monday, adding losses could total HK$3 billion ($387 million). Leung Yiu-chung said his office recently received reports from dozens of investors in Hong Kong who paid a total of HK$40 million ($5.16 million) into the scheme run online by MyCoin, but the total loss may be vastly more. 'The number of cases is increasing. These two days I received calls about more than 30 cases. We estimate more than 3,000 people and HK$3 billion are involved,' he told AFP."

I won't hold my breath for this to be extended to us prepaid folks on Verizon, who are still treated with the same suspicion and distain as drug dealers and the homeless.

Citation: when I make a call, I first have to listen to "The time remaining for this call is... unlimited." If it's unlimited, why bother saying anything? Oh, that's right; how else to express their derision and lack of respect for someone that deigned to opt-out of an overly-expensive multi-year contract than to make them feel like low-rent trash with every call.

More and more Craigslist purchases are occurring in police station lobbies to ensure the safety of both parties. This tech should be available as well for CL hookups (protected from tampering by either - any? - of the prospective partners, of course). I can't think a better way of striking a blow against STD transmission rates.

Of course, it will never happen as this puritanical country (US) still can't come to terms with adult, consensual, out of wedlock casual sex., so STD away, as it's God's Punishment (TM) for daring to enjoy the pleasure he 'created'.

I fear that if the Right loses on this issue (and face it: siding with the most-hated corporations of a most-hated industry is awful retail politics), they have one arrow they will pull from their quiver.

If it is re/classified under Title II, the right will quickly insist there be bans on every type pornography (with a definition that will even encompass old National Geographics), hate speech (read: not approved by their paymasters), and of course: effective, non-backdoored encryption.

UEFI and Systemd seem the perfect match: both pushed by shadowy, nefarious, a-hole entities, 'solving' problems in the worst locked-in ways possible, favoring certain for-profit institutions over all others, with a great possibility of backdoors built in to appease (or in paid service to) the organs of state security.
