Journal Journal: POLITICS: WHY????? 4

God I HATE politics. They're so damn complicated at a minute level. Here's an example of something I can't comprehend. The local League of Women Voters has publications meant to help you make decisions about who to vote for. In the case of a two candidates running for the Supreme Court of Ohio they were both asked the same question:

Journal Journal: WiFi: Why? 3

I've been wondering recently... WHY is WiFi authentication left up to the OS instead of the BIOS? Picture this:

1. You turn on your laptop and go into it's BIOS or firmware.
2. There is a WiFi section in it where you can set your SSID and key if needed.
3. The BIOS or firmware then presents the WiFi device as a standard NIC to the OS (possibly based on a very well supported chipset)

Journal Journal: MS DNS SUCKS: Why Oh Why!!!?? 3

I just saw the weirdest DNS behavior EVAR! One of our clients (and admin himself) called to say his users couldn't access their Outlook Web Agent on their Exchange server. He poked around a bit and saw that the DNS response was wrong. Instead of resolving to the internal private network address, DNS was giving the external NAT address that only works on the outside. So I checked the primary DNS server (an OPenVMS box, not one of those pretender Windows DNS servers) here and saw that it ha

Journal Journal: ON LOCATION: The Shoreway (Old 2) in Cleveland (UPDATED)

This sort of thing is what I love for. To see people giving a hard time to other people (or organizations) who deserve it. Anyway... If you can believe it, the defaced billboard is STILL defaced. ;P Hehehehe. Alltel deserves it. They screwed a ton of people over with their "circle" plan. I know someone who signed up and wound up getting socked with a $400+ phone bill for talking to a friend who was in his circle, b

Journal Journal: WHY: The 'date' Command 3

I needed to figure out how to get the 'date' command in Unix to give me yesterday's date. It turns out that it is rather simple, although the initial man page doesn't really provide examples... Here's how you do it:

Journal Journal: ANAHUAC: Where do I Fit In? 2

I see the point of the Mexica Movement but after 500 years, I don't think there's a whole lot that can be done. Take me for example. I know for a fact that I am of Incan descent. It is one of my heritages that I'm proud of. But I also have German, Hungarian and Spanish ancestors. IF the Mexica movement were to get their way (which I don't see happening), where would someone like me fit in? Am I a colonial interloper who should be d

Monday: 8:17AM

I'm on my way to work and I see a work crew putting up a new ad on a billboard near the freeway. Don't know what ad it was, nor do I care.

Tuesday: 8:20AM

I'm on my way to work and see a billboard for a local cell provider (Alltel?) boasting that you can talk to ANYONE on ANY network if you join them. Who cares? Looks like more crap to me that means nothing.

Have you ever been frustrated that you've got a nice DVD drive in one Linux box and not the other and wished there was a way to have another box access it as if it were in the box itself? Me too. Our wishes have been granted. (We're not talking file sharing here or NFS. We're talking direct, low level access to a remote drive over the network as if it were in the box) Read on...

POP! I said in a comment a few weeks back that I would post some recipes for soft drinks based on the Stevia supplement (that is sweeter than sugar). Keep in mind, if you are into Coke or Pepsi, NONE of these will truly satisfy your caffeine urge although my wife swears that the Cherry variation and it's associated carbonated fizzle pep her up a bit. A few things to note as well. For some of the juices I use the Knudsen brand "pure" series that has no refined sugar or corn syrup. I also

Journal Journal: LIFE: No Time 2

Uggh. I've attempted several times in the past two weeks to write a JE and haven't had the time. Last week was excusable as I was on vacation. The first REAL time off I've had in a while. But I'm paying the price now. A week off here at work means five weeks worth of catch-up. I hope to be able to post here again eventaully.
