If you think I admitted to tax evasion, then FUCK YOU.

Read a few replies above this, my replies to narcc.

I committed no crimes. I sold at a loss, and thus reported no profits. I could not prove that now since I have no receipts for the things I am selling at a loss, yet eBay will 1099 me for selling those items as though I had paid the full selling price for them PLUS shipping.

Further, you don't know me. You haven't read my tax returns, so you accuse me? FUCK YOU VERY MUCH.

Comment Re:As per democrats' request (Score 2) 264

I am completely aware of the difference between profit and revenue but as you say a lot of people are not. The entire problem is that this new law assumes everything is revenue and you are 1099'd on your GROSS sales and then it's up to you to prove whether is profit or not. You're assumed guilty until you prove yourself innocent more or less. That's what is unfair and onerous about it. It places the burden of knowing and PROVING that essential difference onto hobby sellers.

No, I'm not a tax cheat, and fuck you for saying so.

I paid thousands of dollars for test equipment at flea markets for years then resold it for cents on the dollar years later, well below its usual resale value, usually. I made no profit. I only hoped to recoup a tiny fraction of what I spent over the years.

So, yes, I kept records on the few items I could obtain receipts for, and am taking losses on everything I sell, so no, I am not cheating. I also used to run a lucrative software company and kept fastidious records with that, so it's not like I don't know what I'm doing in the small business area.

Comment Re:As per democrats' request (Score 2, Insightful) 264

I know you're going for the big laughs here, but this is much more serious than you think or say. They are not just "catching tax cheats and liars", they are making a BUSINESS out of everyone who sells more than $600 or 20 items a year as a hobby or to earn a little extra cash in their spare time.

They have effectively killed off the casual hobby seller on eBay, etc. Now, everyone who sells a few items like old radios, mechanical or electrical parts, board games, plastic models, candles, etc. are going to be reported if they sell more than 20 items or make $600.00 or more per year. That means they have to report that as a self-employment "business" income, and deduct all expenses like shipping and the cost of the goods initially. They report GROSS sales and proceeds, which means you are even screwed on the cost of shipping!

I used to buy things at flea markets and resell them on eBay for many, many years. They have killed my hobby income now almost completely, Since I have no receipts for things bought at flea markets over the years, or any way to prove the cost of goods so if I were ever audited, I'd be fucked.

So, no this does not just affect "liars" and "tax cheats", it FORCES every small seller to become a formal BUSINESS whether they want to or not in order to not be taxed improperly for profits they really didn't make.

In TFS, they say they detonated it in the "wee hours" of October 30, 1961. Does the author know what "wee hours" means?

Usually, it means the small (or "wee") hours early after midnight, i.e. 1:00 A.M. to, presumably, dawn which is sometime around 5 A.M. depending on where you live, time of year, etc.

Now, the historical description of the test says it was detonated at 11:30 AM. AM? That's a half hour before noon, DEFINITELY NOT "wee hours" by any stretch of the imagination, not even the "wee hours" of the afternoon, which doesn't exist, but if it did, it would be from 1:00 P.M. to probably dusk, around 5 P.M, but no one uses that expression, but even if they did, 11:30 A.M. does NOT qualify.

Even the video of the drop clearly shows it's daylight outside, not night time. "wee hours"?

I don't think so!

The problem is the pilings don't go down to bedrock, as I understand it. There is a layer of Bay Clay on top of the bedrock that is between the bedrock and the pilings beneath the tower. The pilings they showed in the illustration I saw only went about halfway through the Bay Clay, and that's why it's settling and tilting. If they had put in deeper pilings to begin with, all the way down to the bedrock, then this wouldn't have been a problem.

However, many buildings can't be anchored all the way down to bedrock, sometimes it's just too deep (expensive) and/or the supporting soil or clay layers are strong enough to support the building's weight, after a bit of calculated settling.

More disturbing, the duplicated post title of the 2nd post in my profile appears as the actual post title in the big thread to which it was posted, so the indexing fuckup seems to have affected posts appearing in the yro subsection, at least as I can see it.

Good luck with this one! it appears to be getting worse with the additional posts, so I'll stop now. :)

Something with the post database is fucked up somehow, and it's mis-indexing my posts and thus showing a duplicate of my penultimate previous post instead of the proper actual most recent last post..

I hope the Management here reads this and can investigate, but it sounds like the database is getting creeping index rot or some kind of similar internal badness. Otherwise, is there a better way to report an internal problem or point out what looks like errant post indexing?

This should be interesting, sort of in a boring techie way. I hope the problem is just with the profile database or perhaps the yro subdomain database, and not the whole big master database indexing.

Finally, I'll be curious see if this most recent post kicks the problem down, or maybe it will make it worse with another dupe, perhaps? We shall see.

I was so happy when I got it, and I was so frustrated from the many, many hours and programs lost from data errors and unreliable tape/audio data reading and writing. I was so annoyed by it that when I bought the disk drive and transcribed all my tapes (another supremely annoying experience!) I threw the tape drive out a 2nd story window, and watched it ,land with a delicate smash!

Then, I went downstairs, and jumped up and down on the drive for about 5 minutes, then beat it with a Golf club for another few minutes or so just for good measure at all the pain it had caused me!!

Ah, the fond memories... I just recently sold my first TRS-80 system at a Vintage Computer Show. :)
