What's Stopping Us From Eating Insects? 655

Lasrick writes "Scientific American has a really nice article explaining why insects should be considered a good food source, and how the encroachment of Western attitudes into societies that traditionally eat insects is affecting consumption of this important source of nutrients. Good stuff." Especially when they're so easy to grow.

No, actually... he's referring to the original slashdot review of the iPod.

"No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame."

And yes, while accurate on the tech specs, it fails to point out the true difference was the UI, how to load it up (iTunes), etc.

TL;DR - tech specs aren't everything. YOU care about them, but most people just want something that works well.

Submission + - Syndicate series spiritual sequel after 17 years: Satellite Reign (kickstarter.com)

kneeslasher writes: When EA/Starbreeze announced announced a Syndicate reboot, those in their 30s became excited, only to find out it had been reformatted as an FPS www.starbreeze.com/games/syndicate/ . For many, it appeared that the last chance to resurrect squad-based top down gaming in a cyber-punk world, from two decades in the wilderness, had been wasted. Given the strong feelings the originals inspire in their fans, taking on the responsibility for a successor was never going to be easy. Mike Diskett, who worked on Syndicate and Syndicate Wars

Submission + - $250k Human Powered Helicopter prize has been won after 33 years

daltec writes: While many aerospace engineers thought it could not be done, the AHS Igor I. Sikorsky Human Powered Helicopter competition has been won, after 33 years of trying. Canada's AeroVelo has claimed the $250,000 prize, having successfully met the contest requirements for an aircraft using only human power to fly for at least 60 seconds, reach an altitude of at least 3 meters (9.8 feet) and remain hovering over a 10 by 10 meter (32.8 by 32.8 foot) area.

"Atlas," AeroVelo's winning design, is said to be larger than any operational helicopter ever constructed, based on its overall width of 58 meters (190 feet), even though it weighs only 52 kilograms (115 pounds). It has four 20.4 meter (67 foot) diameter rotors that are powered by the pilot pedaling a Cervelo carbon-fiber bicycle. The Atlas project was begun in January 2012 and made its first flight in August 2012.

AeroVelo is one of three teams recently flying as part of the AHS competition. The others are the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland with its Gamera II helicopter, and California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California with its Upturn II aircraft.

There is a video of the winning flight here. Congratulations to AeroVelo on this landmark achievement!

I've been using an app lately called DIVIDE which allows this. You don't lock your phone, & it only wipes the data within the App. Meeting notifications pop up. Free, too, somehow.

Now if they could add some blackberry-style filters (where the email doesn't go to the device, but stays in my Inbox), I'd be ecstatic.

What you're looking for is software virtualization/sandboxing. Install it using one of these, and when you need to use the app turn it "on", then off when done. Prevents cruft and all the other issues you're complaining about. Trust me, same issues here.

I just went looking, and there are several options these days - when Windows 7 came out, I lost the ability to use my favorite (Altiris). Fortunately, it appears to be fixed and working with 7.

Submission + - Fox, Univision May Go Subscription to Stop Aereo

GTRacer writes: In response to Aereo's recent win allowing per-user over-the-air antenna feeds to remote devices, Fox COO Chase Carey said, "We need to be able to be fairly compensated for our content. This is not an ideal path we look to pursue [...]", that path being a switch to a subscription model. Spanish-language stalwart Univison may join Fox, per CEO Haim Saban. Aereo replied, in part, "When broadcasters asked Congress for a free license to digitally broadcast on the public's airwaves, they did so with the promise that they would broadcast in the public interest and convenience, and that they would remain free-to-air. Having a television antenna is every American's right." A switch to a pay-TV subscription model would stymie Aereo but could hurt affiliate stations.

Israeli Firm Makes Kilomile Claims For Electric Car Battery Tech 247

cylonlover writes with this tantalizing excerpt from GizMag "Israel-based company Phinergy claims to have developed metal-air battery technology that promises to end the range anxiety associated with electric vehicles. The company's battery currently consists of 50 aluminum plates, each providing energy for around 20 miles (32 km) of driving. This adds up to a total potential range of 1,000 miles (1,609 km), with stops required only every couple of hundred miles to refill the system with water."

Submission + - Why hasn't 3D taken off for the web?

clockwise_music writes: "With HTML5 we're closer to the point where a browser can do almost everything that a native app can do. The final frontier is 3D, but WebGL isn't even part of the HTML5 standard, Microsoft refuse to support it, Apple want to push their native apps and it's not supported in the Android mobile browser. Flash used to be an option but Adobe have dropped mobile support. To reach most people you'd have to learn Javascript, WebGL and Three.js/Scene.js for Chrome/Firefox, then you'd have to learn actionscript + flash for the microsofties, then learn objective c for the apple fanboyz, then learn Java to write a native app for Android. Phew!

When will 3D finally become available for all? Do you think it's inevitable or will it never see the light of day?"

Not anymore. They discontinued it for new users in October(http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/19/t-mobile-drops-200mb-smartphone-data-plan/). Now, the minimum is $20. I'm buying a freedompop ($100, 500mb/month free) later today. Hopefully that'll work. Separate device, but hopefully still workable.
