I do agree. I didn't want to start a PC vs. Console war, I was more speaking from experience as someone who has little to no extra cash for gaming nowadays. For me, the 360 that I bought all those years ago is now the center of my entertainment setup. I use it for playing DVDs, last.fm, Netflix, and as a bonus I can play the latest game if I can afford it.

I guess that when it comes down to it I'm just not a hardcore gamer anymore, not by choice but by budget. If I could blow 600 dollars to start a new PC from scratch it would probably kick a lot of ass, and I'd do it in a heartbeat. But as it stands now my PC does the things I need it for, and I don't need it for games. Doesn't stop me from firing up Counter Strike Source every now and then, though.

$600 for HD TV

I'm not including the price of a monitor when I compare the costs of PC and 360.

$50 for an additional controller

How much is an additional controller for PC?

$30 x 2 for chatpads or about $1300 in three years.

Never needed one of those.

I'm not saying consoles are better, just that they're cheaper. I also have used both.

Similarly priced console? I wonder how well a 400 dollar "gaming" PC purchased in 2005 runs the newest PC games. And if you had such a system, your games start to look worse and worse, whereas a 360 owner will only notice improvements in graphic quality.

Consoles are a great option if you don't like to have control or options, that is it.

Or if you want all the console exclusive games.

Console games are still great for the kids who don't know where the real gaming is.

I know you're being facetious, but I disagree. The reason I play console games almost exclusively now is because I don't have a desire to spend copious amounts of cash every year to upgrade my rig. I spent 400 dollars years ago for my 360 and I can play the newest games just as well as anyone. Buy a decent computer and watch how long it takes without upgrading before your games barely run.

IBM's Newest Mainframe Is All Linux 251

dcblogs writes "IBM has released a new mainframe server that doesn't include its z/OS operating system. This Enterprise Linux Server line supports Red Hat or Suse. The system is packaged with mainframe management and virtualization tools. The minimum processor configuration uses two specialty mainframe processors designed for Linux. IBM wants to go after large multicore x86 Linux servers and believes the $212,000 entry price can do it."

Also, LPs are expensive! If you can find a new pressing of a single disc LP for about $20, you've done well. I've seen some listing for prices of $30 or much much more for 1 disc of some newer pressings. No wonder the industry loves it. The profit on these must be immense. An upcoming Sam Cooke re-issue of one disc on 45 RPM (yes, 45 RPM) vinyl LP is listing for $50. All prices are in US dollars.

I've learned from my friends with other sexuals orientations that heterosexuality is very loud and very obnoxious. You just don't see it, because it's everywhere and it's normal. Going against this established norm automatically becomes obnoxious in some people's eyes, because it upsets the status quo and their narrow definitions of what's normal and acceptable.

I suspect you're one of those people. Getting upset because a ficitonal character is portrayed as gay is pretty sad. Even worse, thinking that it's a sign of homosexual propaganda to kids is bordering on homophobic. Showing kids homosexuality is normal isn't mean just to let the homosexuals among them feel as normal as you and I do, but it's also for the heterosexuals and their views of homosexuals. They need to be taught that different sexual orientation is no different from race or ethnicity. You don't disciriminate and you don't hate because of it. It's not propaganda, it's basic education in being an enlightened human being and not a fearful, narrowminded bigot.

You can have as many cards and screens as you can fit, but note one thing;

To use more than one card in a multi-monitor setup and be able to move windows from one screen to the other you'll need to use Xinerama.

But the use Xinerama disables compositing. That means no wobbly windows, compiz, etc.

There's a hack to fudge around that by using Xorg over xserver-xgl but it isn't perfect though.

I've only had it running with KDE successfully.

Comment Copyright as it stands makes no sense. (Score 1) 705

There's nothing wrong with the concept of copyrights and patents. Even the Founding Fathers realized the value of them.

Your founding fathers lived in a particular time and place under particular circumstances. They had no Internet or any form of instant communication. They had no device that could copy a book in under a second. They also were not infallible - some of them condoned slavery and owned slaves.

By the way copyright didn't make sense even 2000 years ago. Around then the great library at Alexandria existed. Merchant ships were searched and books confiscated, duplicated and returned to their owners. THat resulted in the greatest library ever known. There's a VERY high price to allowing copyright.

So why is copyright flawed? It gives CONTROL over the publicly released work to the author. It's giving the author their cake and letting him eat it too. I have no issue with an artist or author being compensated fairly for their work for some period of time. I have a huge problem with them or their publishers controlling the work and deciding the price arbitrarily. I have a huge problem with people hoarding knowledge. How much of the world's publications are only available to the rich? (Can you justify spending $3000 on a 7 volume reference you may only rarely use - I have only just faced that question - look up HAZNAB. I have a family to feed, and it's jsut not worth that much money). As for publishers, they provide nothing anymore. Except protectionist laws that threaten people with jail time over ridciulously minor infringements. (Even sending children off to the colonies if they stole bread was less cruel since food when scarce is a matter of life or death). Publishers need to fade away.

I don't care about pirates, or modders, but what REALLY got me about them was they were the only ones who could cheat while playing on Live. This made my experience playing CoD4 worse, because some jerk had a modded xbox and hacked game that let him use a pistol that could fire 10x faster than normal (among other cheats).

I paid for my Xbox, my Live service, and my games. I want a fair experience on Xbox Live, and if that means you can't play your modded xbox, I'm sorry, but too bad so sad. You knew what you were getting when you bought the damn thing.

Lord, I can never take people like you seriously, sadly. It's people like you that muddy the whole issue we are dealing with here with your ill informed and completely false information you continually propagate.

There is no possible way a modded console allowed someone to cheat in your game. A modded console only allows you to play copied games - the games on the disc must ABSOLUTELY be identical to the original or it won't run. If you got owned it was because you suck, not because someone was playing with cheats.
