Submission + - Linux Media Center Apps?

Bryan Gividen writes: I am looking to turn my quickly-aging Dell Laptop into a Linux Media Center that I will hook up to a flatscreen TV. As a Linux novice, I use Ubuntu and am looking for good applications to make it a complete Media Center. Thing is, I don't know how complete, complete can be. I turn to Slashdot to guide me on everything I should install and any additional hardware I ought to look into.

Submission + - TSA, Airlines launch pre-travel permission system (abc2news.com) 1

drDugan writes: ABC news is reporting that the US Transportation Security Administration is rolling out new security guidelines called the 'Secure Flight Program'. When buying a ticket, travelers provide the full name, gender, and date of birth that matches the government-issued photo ID used at the time of travel. The collected data will be used to screen against state-run watch lists before travel begins, effectively creating a permission based system for US flights. The TSA press release asserts, "Secure Flight will make travel safer and easier for passengers." The goal is for the government agency to pre-approve travel for 100% of all domestic and international flights by the end of next year. EPIC also has details.

Submission + - StephenConroy.com.au vs auDA – the stoush co (itwire.com)

Grimo writes: Both sides are holding their ground; unfortunately the ground currently held by auDA includes the confiscated domain name. Late yesterday, Chris Dispain of auDA responded to Monday's open letter in defence of the 'takedown' against stephenconroy.com.au. The response; After some consideration, website administrators responded with this:
It is again with great disappointment that we note you have failed to acknowledge para 3 (point 2) of our previous communication. We feel that your initial handling of this issue is of particular relevance and again contest that your office acted politically in it's motivation to shut down our site. We request that control of the 'stephenconroy.com.au' related domain names be returned to us within three business hours of this communication, the same time you granted us to make representations on Friday 18 December. Please note that this is an open letter which we intend to publish and release to the media immediately.

Two Arrested For Zbot Trojan 95

An anonymous reader writes "Officers from the Metropolitan Police's Central e-Crime Unit have made Europe's first arrests in the battle against the ZeuS or Zbot Trojan which threatened to compromise thousands of computers. Officers arrested a man and woman, both aged 20 years, in Manchester for offenses under the 1990 Computer Misuse Act and the 2006 Fraud Act. Both suspects were interviewed by PCeU detectives and have been bailed for further in-depth inquiries to be completed. The arrests in connection with the malware represent some of the first in the world, and the first in Europe to combat the distribution and control of ZeuS."

Using Drupal For Company Intranet; What To Expect? 20

jjbliss writes "I am in the beginning stages of setting-up our company intranet. I have done some research and think that Drupal is the right CMS to use for this as it is very rich-featured, free and open-source yet well-supported, has a broad user and development community, and seems to be customizable to the degree that I need it to be. My question for Slashdot is who out there is using Drupal for this purpose? What have been your biggest issues in getting up and running? What should I know going into it? I am fairly proficient with HTML, CSS, Javascript, LAMP, etc. What sort of learning curve will there be in developing within Drupal? Are there any experts out there that we could bring in when I hit a problem that is over my head to fix? Where do you recommend finding them?"

Submission + - Best open source asset tracking solution?

Waynelson writes: I've been dealing with terrible commercial closed source asset tracking systems within the military for a while now and just recently i've been given permission to migrate to a new system if we can find something that works. We're looking for an asset tracking program that support taking regular inventories using unique asset ids that are scanned via a hand held device into a flat .csv file. What have you used and would you recommend it?

Submission + - DD-214 Now Available Online

pdragon04 writes: When leaving the US Armed Forces, it was always stressed how important it was to never loose your copy of your DD-214 as it was your only record of having served. Getting a new copy if you lost it was a long and arduous process and significantly delayed obtaining veterans benefits. An email today from my college's financial aid office stated:

"It's official, DD-214's are NOW Online. The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has provided the following website for veterans to gain access to their DD-214's online: http://vetrecs.archives.gov/

This may be particularly helpful when a veteran needs a copy of his DD-214 for employment purposes. NPRC is working to make it easier for veterans with computers and Internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military files. Military veterans and the next of kin of deceased former military members may now use a new on-line military personnel records system to request documents. Other individuals with a need for documents must still complete the Standard Form 180, which can be downloaded from the on-line web site. Because the requester will be asked to supply all information essential for NPRC to process the request, delays that normally occur when NPRC has to ask veterans for additional information will be minimized. The new web-based application was designed to provide better service on these requests by eliminating the records centers mailroom and processing time."

Submission + - CentOS 5.4 released (centos.org)

beefsprocket writes: The CentOS-announce mailing list has a release announcement for CentOS-5.4. If 5.3 is anything to go by, this is sure to be a stellar release. You may recall CentOS was previously discussed on Slashdot when the main developer went AWOL http://linux.slashdot.org/story/09/07/30/130249/CentOS-Project-Administrator-Goes-AWOL. However, the past few months' drama seems to have had little negative effect, with this new release following RedHat 5.4 by just over a month. The announcement reads:

We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of CentOS-5.4 for i386 and x86_64 Architectures.

CentOS-5.4 is based on the upstream release EL 5.4.0, and includes packages from all variants including Server and Client. All upstream repositories have been combined into one, to make it easier for end users to work with. And the option to further enable external repositories at install time is now available in the installer.

This is just an announcement email, not the release notes. The Release Notes for CentOS-5.4 can be found on-line at : http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOS5.4 and everyone is encouraged to look through them once. Also worth browsing through at the CentOS FAQ's at http://wiki.centos.org/FAQ"

Submission + - How Would You Monitor Internet Access in the Home? 2

gwn writes: I googled this problem only to learn that I really need the help of folks who have a clue. I need your help Slashdot. I have been charged with the task of setting up a system to covertly monitor the internet use of some relatively tech savvy teenagers. The environment consists of a basic home network with each user accessing the internet with their machines through a common shared dsl connection. I am looking for suggestions on how to accomplish this. If you have had success with software installed on the client, proxy servers installed on the network, or sniffing software, etc., please let me know the details. The adults in this situation are simply concerned for the teens. And yes, they have talked to them, but know they are not getting the whole story.

Submission + - Hacker blackmails ISP for unlimited Bandwitdh (adsl-bc.org)

abelchemoul writes: In Belgium, the biggest ISP (Belgacom/Skynet) is still capping the traffic on most of their offer (mine is 25Go a month), and most of other ISP do the same. Not for long? A hacker named Vendetta has published today login data from 1000 users. Apparently abusing an exploit from the router Skynet give to their clients, he threatens to release 1000 account data a week until end of november if the quotas aren't abolished.
From his post : "Be warned shitty ISPs, if you don\'t want me to share the exploit along with over 285.000 ADSL logins just stop this shitty bandwidth capping"

Submission + - Does your college or university support Linux? 4

yuna49 writes: Lately I have been visiting colleges with my daughter who's a senior in high school. Every school has proudly announced that they support both Windows and Macs, and most of these schools report having about a 50-50 split between the two technologies. However we've been a Linux household for many years now, and my daughter routinely uses a laptop running Kubuntu 9.04. Sometimes I would ask the student tour guide if Linux was supported and was usually met with a blank stare. We're obviously not concerned about whether she can write papers using OpenOffice and Linux. Rather we've been wondering about using other computing services on campus like classroom applications, remote printing, VPNs, or wifi support (nearly all these campuses have ubiquitous wifi). Given the composition of Slashdot's readership, I thought I'd pose the question here. Does your school support Linux? Have you found it difficult or impossible to use Linux in concert with the school's computing services?

Submission + - Apache site hacked through SSH compromise (threatpost.com)

Trailrunner7 writes: "The main site of the Apache Software Foundation was compromised on Friday through an attack using a compromised SSH key, leading to concerns about the integrity of copies of the hugely popular Apache Web server, which is distributed through the Apache.org site. Early Friday morning EDT, a message appeared on the main Apache.org site saying that the main Web server for the site had been compromised and that the foundation had taken many of its services offline as a precaution. A short time later, the foundation updated the notification, saying that the compromise was the result of a compromised SSH key, not the result of an attack against the Apache server itself."

Submission + - Deposit Checks by iPhone (nytimes.com) 1

kaychoro writes: The New York Times is reporting a mobile banking enhancement: "The Internet has taken a lot of the paperwork out of banking, but there is no avoiding paper when someone gives you a check. Now one bank wants to let customers deposit checks immediately — through their phones. USAA, a privately held bank and insurance company, plans to update its iPhone application this week to introduce the check deposit feature, which requires a customer to photograph both sides of the check with the phone's camera. "We're essentially taking an image of the check, and once you hit the send button, that image is going into our deposit-taking system as any other check would," said Wayne Peacock, a USAA executive vice president. Customers will not have to mail the check to the bank later; the deposit will be handled entirely electronically, and the bank suggests voiding the check and filing or discarding it."
