Comment Re:Lessig on what plex is really important (Score 0, Flamebait) 106

No matter how much people hate Microsoft, comments like this may me despise the free software movement. Somehow, i have this idea that MS providing 50,000 jobs, Microsoft funneling BILLIONS into research and believe it or not, Microsoft making some great products is a *GOOD* thing. The FSF has its merits and should do more to be a leader of what MS could do rather than dividing the community into believers or non believers for all the wrong reasons.

As for codeplex itself, there is some amazing projects in there and i doubt MS is gonna piss away the effort. THey're just like google in many ways with their online presence where they test the waters and see if it sticks, but that *IS* business my friends.

Rather than write them all off, you could simply have a look at their financials and decide for yourself. Most major charities publish this information and you can see how much of your donation will be used for administrative costs. Some of the better ones actually let you mark your donation such that it cannot be used for administrative costs.

While I appreciate the sentiment of your post, there exists economies of scale in relief efforts, so fragmenting everything locally for fear of administrative waste is foolish. Do a little homework and donate accordingly.

Comment The actual announcement comes out. - no hype (Score 1) 325

After the crap articles in "gizmo" rags, the actual announcement from Panasonic was released on December 25. "Panasonic Corporation today announced the development of two new 18650-type (18 mm in diameter, 65 mm in height) high-capacity lithium-ion battery cells[1] for use in laptop computers and environmentally-friendly energy technologies. The company boosted the capacity of 18650-type battery cells, which are widely used in laptops, by improving electrode materials. By improving the positive electrode, it has achieved the 3.4 Ah cell which offers 20 percent greater capacity than the current 2.9 Ah model. The 3.4 Ah cell will be mass produced in fiscal 2012 ending in March 2012. The 4.0 Ah cell, which has 30 percent greater capacity compared to the 2.9 Ah cell, uses a next generation electrode material, a silicon based alloy for the negative electrode, substituting carbon. The 4.0 Ah cell will be mass produced in fiscal 2013 ending in March 2013."

So that's it. Lithium-ion batteries with 20% more capacity in 2012, and another 17% for 2013, or a 38% improvement over the next 3 years. Nice for laptops, very helpful for electric cars.

THIS might be a reasonable computer to use in the back country especially if you could use a stylus instead/in addition to a warm finger. (A limitation of the iPhone is that a gloved finger doesn't work. And an ungloved cold finger doesn't work.)

Consider:

* Every field guide with enough pix to give a chance at identification. Alternate keying systems. Seine Keys. (Too many keying systems depend on characteristics that aren't present all the time -- E.g. flowers. A seine keying system allows you to fill in what is known. (Leaves alternate/opposite -- margins entire or serate...) After each one the number of remaining plants are shown.

* Bird Shazaam. Point the microphone at a bird, wait for it to cheep, chirp, or squawk. Instant Identity. More significantly: Connect it to a high gain microphone, let it sit for an hour, and it does a survey: (27 different chickadees making terratory calls. Two juvenile whiskey jacks learning to sing, and the first robin in spring.)

* Take a picture. GPS location and compass orientation of picture is added to the metadata. Then you can make notes on the picture.

* GPS mapping that shows enough map to be useful.

Thing is: it's already too big to fit in any pocket I have. Make it 9" x 12" so that it's the size of a standard clip board.

I'm afraid I cannot provide you with that discussion (as I'm not even nearly technical enough to talk about it, would love to read such a discussion though). What I mean with 'sucks' is that I experience lag where ALSA doesn't and problems with using multiple programs (I admit the error may be in those programs not properly supporting Pulse) and sound just sometimes even drops when going to a few webpages with Flash for example (need to restart the system to fix that). I just appears very buggy and laggy to me, and judging from the chatter here and on forums etc I'm not alone in that.
